F-35 jet reported missing by authorities after pilot ejects during ‘mishap’: Officials

Authorities found a field of debris Monday evening in the US military’s search for the missing F-35 stealth jet that the pilot ejected from Sunday during a freak “accident,” officials said.

The wreckage was found about two hours northeast of Joint Base Charleston in Williamsburg County, according to a press release from the South Carolina military base.

“Members of the community should avoid the area as recovery teams secure the debris field,” Joint Base Charleston said.

The joint base transferred incident command to the United States Marine Corps as the recovery process began. The base could not officially confirm the debris was from the jet that disappeared Monday night.

The $90 million jet, described by Lockheed Martin as “the deadliest, quietest and most survivable aircraft in the world” disappeared after its pilot abandoned the plane on autopilot before bailing out in a parachute and landing in the homeowner’s backyard Sunday afternoon.

But the search for the jet was hampered because the transponder — which would normally help locate it — wasn’t working “for some reason we haven’t determined,” base spokesman Jeremey Huggins told the Washington Post.

Military officials are even appealing to the public for tips that may lead to the jet.

“The matter is under investigation, and we are unable to provide additional details to preserve the integrity of the investigative process,” Joint Base Charleston said Monday afternoon.

The missing jet has led to some taunts in the past 24 hours.

“How did you lose the F-35?” Rep. South Carolina Nancy Mace tweets.

“How come there’s no tracking device and we’re asking people for what, find the jet and hand it over?
