Dem Rep. Ritchie Torres rips half-hearted DSA rally apology as ‘despicable’

A Bronx House Democrat called the socialist group “despicable,” after it issued a half-hearted apology for promoting a violent pro-Palestinian rally in Manhattan last weekend.

Rep. Ritchie Torres noted that the mea culpa postponed by the Democratic Socialist Party of America in New York City on Tuesday for the rally should not “bother to mention, let alone condemn, Hamas and the genocide of the Jews,” in a Wednesday X broadcast.

“It refers vaguely to ‘loved ones in danger.’ It displays moral outrage only when it blames Israel as the ‘main cause’ of terrorism,” Torres said of the statement.

“DSA, despite its name, is not democratic. It is vile, disgusting, shameful, and shameful. The same can be said for anyone who enables them.”

The widely criticized demonstration came shortly after the brutal execution of more than 1,000 Israelis and the abduction of at least 100 people, including infants, women and children.

DSA issued an apology that failed to apologize and explain anything but its own absurdity.

It features the burning of the Israeli flag and taunts of counter-protesters with at least one image of a swastika. Organizers have encouraged participants to wear masks, apparently so they cannot be identified by authorities.

The rally was immediately blasted by Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams as “disgusting” and “hateful,” but most DSA-affiliated lawmakers from the city declined to comment on it the next day, with several telling The Post that their boss was too busy observing Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day to issue a statement.

Finally, damage control statements about the rally from DSA-related lawmakers like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal Bowman started pouring in, most coming two days after the rally and more than 24 hours after The Post reached out for comment.

“On Saturday, in anticipation of the escalating violence to come, we sent out a tweet promoting the rally in solidarity with the Palestinian people,” the NYC-DSA statement read, adding that it strongly condemned “all hatred and killing of all civilians.”

“We understand why many, including our allies, were shocked by the timing and tone of this message in a moment of deep fear and sadness. We apologize for the confusion our post caused and for not clearly stating our values.”

Torres was among the Democrats who denounced the rally on Sunday, claiming the DSA was “calling for the destruction of the Jewish State amid the largest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.”

“DSA held hate rallies, chanting: ‘from the River to the Sea,’ which is code for wiping Israel off the face of the earth. Let that sink in,” he wrote on X.
