Demi Lovato’s Sister Madison De La Garza Felt ‘Disconnected’ From Her Mom Before Sobriety Journey

Madison De La Garza feels brand new following her tough battle with addiction! The entertainer is best known as the half-sister of Disney’s sweetheart, Demi Lovato.

Instead of living in the shadow of her siblings, the 21-year-old made a name for herself in Hollywood as a child actress.

However, the TV personality is fighting the same demons as the “Convinced” singer, trapped in the dark world of substance abuse. Luckily, the “Desperate Housewives” star is free and recently opened up about her emotional journey.

The celebrity life is not for the faint of heart, and it is even more challenging for those who find fame at a young age. In a heart-to-heart talk with E! News, De La Garza recalls the trials and tribulations he faced growing up in the spotlight.

According to the TV personality, he is “248 days into his recovery journey,” a journey he didn’t accept until he realized change was necessary for his survival. “I went through a lot last year that made me want to stay in bed, made me want to hide from the world,” admitted the 21-year-old. “My best friend is material, and it cuts me off from the people around me.”

“When I realized it was starting to affect my relationship with not only my friends but specifically my relationship with my mom, that’s when I knew I had to make a change,” the Dallas native explained.

Repairing his relationship with his mother, Dianna De La Garza, is essential to the “Pink Elephant” co-director’s health plan. She described the former country singer as her “best friend” and stated: “she’s everything to me. I’d do anything for her.”

Finally free of his dark past, the filmmaker shares how sobriety has affected his life. “I feel free. The world looks brighter and more colorful,” the media personality gushed.

De La Garza admits that “things are easier,” opening up about his recent trip to the Big Apple. “I just took a trip to New York, and I didn’t panic because I was attached to the material,” shared the sober entertainer. “I’m not thinking, ‘Oh, what if I can’t use this? What if I don’t have my cane?'”

Given the benefits of embracing a substance-free existence, the “Gnome Alone” voice actor revealed that he inspires others in similar situations. In the words of the TV personality:

“I have helped people who have experienced the same thing as me. I have a lot of friends who look at me and say, ‘Hey, I’m going to go get help, because I saw you get help, and it changed your life. And I want the freedom that you have.’”

The Dallas beauty also credits her sobriety journey to her big half-sister, who she praised for being open about their struggles with addiction and mental health. “She obviously gave me a lot of great big sister advice,” the entertainer said of the “Heart Attack” singer.

“But I think it’s more powerful to see it in action,” the media personality continued. “I’ve started sharing my personal story, and I never would have if it wasn’t for him. His honesty, his courage, and being an open book, I think that’s what drives me.”
