Derek Chauvin’s Family Weighing Legal Options Over Prison Stabbing Situation

Derek Chauvin’s family may be looking to launch a legal battle after being kept in the dark about the ex-cop’s stabbing.

Chauvin, who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd, was stabbed over the weekend on Friday, November 24, while in the Federal Correctional Institution [FCI] in Tucson.

Although the disgraced police officer is reported to be in stable condition, his family continues to lament the lack of transparency surrounding the incident and his current well-being.

According to reports, Chauvin’s loved ones are still in the dark about what happened in prison and the current condition of their family members. The ex-cop’s lawyer, Gregory M. Erickson, revealed that Chauvin’s family still has no idea what led to his stabbing in prison despite their appeals.

The lawyer claimed that since Friday’s incident, he had contacted prison officials eight times, but all to no avail. To make matters worse, Chauvin’s relatives claim they only heard about his stable condition from prison officials who contacted his father but since then it has been quiet.

Erickson described the lack of transparency as “unfair and cruel,” telling TMZ that he directly blames the federal facility in Tucson, AZ, for being slow to update Chauvin’s heirs about what happened. In addition, he claims the prison facility was negligent about the ex-cop’s safety since Chauvin was the most high-profile inmate they had in custody since OJ Simpson.

Erickson told the outlet that if the Chauvin family continues to be kept in the dark about the situation, they will consider their legal options. However, it is uncertain what their options are at this point.

News of Chauvin’s stabbing made headlines over the weekend, with anonymous sources not authorized to speak publicly confirming that the convicted officer was stabbed by another inmate and seriously injured.

The Bureau of Prisons later confirmed the incident in a statement to the Associated Press, saying that an inmate was assaulted at FCI Tucson at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time Friday. The agency revealed that workers brought the incident under control and performed “life-saving measures” before the prisoner was taken to hospital for further treatment.

During the attack, no employees were injured and the FBI was notified, resulting in the suspension of tours for the prison facility that houses approximately 380 inmates. Before the shocking incident, FCI Tucson had reportedly been plagued by security problems and understaffing.

Derek Chauvin’s Mother Says No One Has Contacted Her About Her Son’s Stabbing

Erickson’s disclosure of the possible lawsuit came from Chauvin’s family in line with their denials about learning about the stabbing from the media.

In a previous interview, Carolyn Pawlenty, the mother of a former Minneapolis Police officer, blasted the prison facility for not contacting her despite being listed as an emergency contact number.

“How does this news agency know and her own mother doesn’t?” he complained. “I can’t even think of what to say. I hadn’t slept and was pacing my kitchen and living room floor.”

Erickson also slammed the prison for its radio silence, saying, “It seems to show a poorly run facility and shows how Derek’s attack was allowed to happen. How family members responsible for Derek’s decisions regarding his personal medical care and his emergency contact were not informed after his stabbing further demonstrates weak institutional procedures and a lack of institutional controls.”
