Talk about a plot twist.
Gavin Newsom Gavin Newsom last Thursday night, Gavin Florida, Ron DeSantis revealed that the California governor’s father-in-law himself is among the millions of people who have fled the blue state in recent years — for the Sunshine State.
“So, I talked to a guy who had moved from California to Florida, and he told me that Florida is better governed, safer, better budget, lower taxes, all these things, and he’s very happy with the quality life,” DeSantis said during a Fox News debate with his California counterpart.
“And then he paused, and he said, ‘You know, by the way, I’m Gavin Newsom’s father-in-law.'”
Newsom’s father-in-law, Kenneth Siebel Jr. and Judith Siebel, bought a $3.3 million home in Naples, Fla., in March 2020, according to Fox News.

The Siebels, whose daughter Jennifer has been married to Newsom for 14 years, registered to vote in Florida in June 2020, according to the report.
Around the time of the home purchase, Newsom implemented a statewide shelter-in-place order that won’t be lifted until January 2021.
Business capacity limits and other restrictions will remain in place until June 2021. During that period, more than 40,000 California small businesses closed indefinitely, more than in any other state.
The anecdote drew derision from Newsom, who struggled to spin the fact that about 750,000 more Californians have moved out of state than in since 2021, while net migration to Florida topped 450,000 over the same period.

“The numbers speak for themselves. We have more people moving into the state than leaving. Gavin couldn’t say otherwise. More people are leaving California who are moving,” DeSantis said.
To further argue his point, DeSantis also presented a brown map marking the locations where human feces were found in San Francisco.
“That’s what happened in one of the biggest cities this country has ever had. Human excrement is now a fact of life,” said DeSantis.
The poop map wasn’t the only prop DeSantis used in the debate.

The Sunshine State governor waved a book titled “Gender Queer,” which DeSantis noted had images blacked out before being shown to television viewers.
“This is a book that is in some schools in California,” DeSantis said, calling it “pornography” and noting that it has been banned in Florida schools.
“This is not age appropriate. So we will defend the rights of parents. I think we need to do it all over the country,” added the 2024 presidential candidate.

In an overt appeal to the state’s primary voters, DeSantis continued with the theme of parental rights and hammered Newsom for allowing out-of-state children to get gender reassignment surgery and other procedures in California without parental consent.
“If you’re a parent in Iowa or New Hampshire or South Carolina, your minor child can go to California, without your knowledge or consent, and get hormone therapy, puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgery — all without you aware or agreeable,” DeSantis said.
“How to respect parental rights?”
Newsom skewered DeSantis throughout the debate as well, poking fun at the governor’s floundering presidential campaign.
“The one thing we have in common is that none of us will be the nominee for our party in 2024,” Newsom said, continuing to insist that he has no ambitions to launch a White House bid this election cycle.
“You’re down 41 points in your own home state!” the California governor said, referring to former President Donald Trump’s seemingly insurmountable poll lead in the Florida Republican primary.
Newsom also praised the Biden administration throughout the debate.
“I’m proud of the work that Biden and Harris have done,” he said, noting at the start of the forum that he was there to “tell the truth about the Biden-Harris record” and contrast it with DeSantis and the GOP record.
When asked by debate moderator and Fox News host Sean Hannity if he had concerns about the incumbent’s advanced age and mental acuity, Newsom quipped, “I’ll take Joe Biden and 100 over Ron DeSantis any day of the week, any age.”
