DeSantis warns GOP against using impeachment probe of Biden as ‘Trojan horse’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned that the official GOP impeachment inquiry into President Biden could serve as a “Trojan horse” and a distraction.

While calling the effort to formalize the impeachment inquiry “justifiable,” DeSantis urged Republicans to pay due attention to issues voters care about.

“If you do an investigation, which again, I think is appropriate, you also have to deal with all these other issues,” he told “Meet the Press” in an interview that aired Sunday, citing the budget, borders and the economy.

“Make sure you don’t ignore all these other issues and don’t use that query, as a kind of Trojan horse to not fulfill your responsibilities. and all these other things.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) claimed on Saturday that he has the vote to open an impeachment inquiry into Biden.

Johnson’s predecessor, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), opened an impeachment inquiry against the president in September without a formal vote amid internal Republican turmoil over how to fund the government.

The White House has defended the president, accusing House Republicans of launching an “unconstitutional” investigation due to a lack of official authorization.

This is important because the investigation has issued subpoenas against key figures in their investigation such as Hunter Biden’s eldest son and James Biden’s eldest brother.

The lack of official authorization for an investigation can give witnesses legal ammunition to challenge subpoenas.

An impeachment inquiry is a different fact-finding mission than a formal impeachment.

At the center of the investigation are allegations of influence peddling. DeSantis explained that he was very skeptical of the Biden family’s foreign business dealings.

“I think the Biden family — the amount of money flowing into that family — to me, is corruption. I think it’s not explained in a way that makes sense,” he said.

DeSantis also clarified his stance on whether he would support a national six-week ban on abortion as president.

“This is something that will be done in a bottom-up way,” DeSantis said.

He signed legislation to that effect in Florida in April, but it has been in limbo because of litigation.

“Part of me promoting a culture of life is doing things that are achievable and that will obviously get a consensus,” he explained.

DeSantis also teased his plan for health care reform, referring to “a plan that will replace Obamacare.”

“We want to make sure we have as many people covered as possible at the lowest price possible,” he said.

Florida’s governor revealed that he has gotten input on health care from around the country and plans to “probably” roll out a proposal in the spring.
