Ding Liren’s Wife: The World Chess Champion Is Married?
Chinese Chess Grandmaster Ding Lire is likely unmarried but nothing can be said for sure as he chooses to hide about his personal life. We know for sure that he is not married at least until 2017. However, since the interview with Chess Base, run by Sagar Shah, it has been five years.
In his recent match in 2023, where he won against Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi, he was not seen wearing any wedding bands on his fingers. But, in Asian culture, men don’t necessarily wear wedding rings and women started wearing rings not long ago in countries influenced by Christianity.
So, it is not clear whether he is married and has a wife.
Ding Liren’s Girlfriend: Is The Chinese Grandmaster Dating Anyone?
Ding Liren does have a girlfriend or at least he mentioned having a girlfriend in 2017. When the International Masters interviewer Sagar Shah of Chess Base asked if he had a girlfriend, Ding Liren replied, “Yes. He is a chess player, but not very strong. We sometimes practice chess in Beijing. I don’t want to reveal his name.”
So, we can say that he has a girlfriend who shares his passion for chess.
Many of his fans think another chess player Hou Yifan is his girlfriend. But, Ding shared that his girlfriend is not a strong chess player and Hounya is an exceptional player, so she is not Ding’s girlfriend.
During a 2020 interview with Chess.com, he also discussed relationships and marriage. He talked about his simple life in his hometown and living alone leaving his parents’ house.
Ding talked about the girlfriend situation saying, “I think this will probably happen when I have a stable relationship with a woman. I really have no desire to live alone. Sometimes I go and spend time with my grandparents. They are very close, and sometimes when my parents work, I go to see them. But in China, it’s the culture that you only (usually) get your own flat once you get married or when you get engaged, so basically when you have a steady girlfriend.
During the interview, Ding mentioned that his most recent relationship at the time ended at the end of 2019. He blamed travel as the reason for his breakup.
On the difficult issue of maintaining a relationship, Ding said, “Yes, I have to agree. In almost every relationship, it becomes a problem to be away all year. Moreover this year, I have played many tournaments. In June I spent the whole month in Europe. It’s hard to find someone who is happy with that. My last relationship ended at the end of last year, and travel may have been the reason for that.”
It is not clear whether he currently has a girlfriend or not.

Ding Liren’s net worth is likely below $200 thousand. The Chinese master started playing chess early in his life. It was his mother and her friends who decided that their children should start playing chess and enrolled them in a chess club.
He told IM Sagar, “Wenzhou is a chess city in China. Former women’s World Champion Zhu Chen is from Wenzhou and also the match between Xie Jun and Korchnoi took place in that city. There is a good atmosphere to learn chess here. I had the same early coach as Zhu Chen. Chen Lixing was my first coach. He is very famous in the Wenzhou Chess Association.”
The chess player quickly achieved notable success thanks to his extraordinary level of talent and incredible perseverance; at the age of 16, Ding won the Chinese championship. He repeated this achievement in 2011 and 2012. Since 2009, he has held the title of international grandmaster.
Every year in the summer he would participate in the Li Chengzhi Cup when he was young which is the strongest tournament for teenagers where he played in all categories. He added, “The Li Chengzhi Cup helped me grow into a strong chess player, to develop my chess skills, to fight with other players from different regions of China.”
In 2012, Ding Liren finished third overall in the U20 global championship, one and a half points behind Richard Rapport and Alexander Ipatov. He was defeated by Wesley So in the opening round of the 2011 World Cup. He had to wait five years for his revenge, which happened in 2016 during a friendly match where the Chinese grandmaster defeated So 2,5:1,5.
Speaking of education, Ding attended Peking University where he studied law. The Chinese player said in the interview, “I studied in the tenth grade until 2009. Only then did I decide to become a professional chess player. My parents thought it would be better to learn something other than chess. I had the opportunity to go to Peking University, which is one of the best in China, without taking any entrance exams. I got admission based on my chess achievements. It was a great opportunity to open my eyes to the world, to learn something new. “
However, instead of a career in law, he preferred to choose a career in chess.
Ding does not entertain playing video games because he finds them boring. His favorite sports are basketball and soccer.
