During an exclusive conversation with ET, the “Jolene” singer recounted the excitement she felt in the car as she headed to her decades-old friend. He admits to being a fan of Warwick’s music since he was young. In the words of the “Coat of Many Colors” hitmaker:

“I was so excited this morning because while I was riding with you, someone asked how long you’ve known Dionne. I said, ‘I don’t know him, except through his music, and I love his music.”

He went on to say, “He is [Warwick] always one of my favorites. I have all his records, but I don’t think I’ve ever met him. I would remember if I met him, but this morning, it was like two young kids like, ‘Hey! Hey! Hey!'”

Parton added that she knew she wouldn’t be “disappointed” when she met Warwick because even though they had communicated via FaceTime and calls, “I knew that I was going to love him because I just felt that voice.”

The “I Will Always Love You” singer explained that her friend’s voice was “kind of inside of me,” giving her the “vibe” that people get when they hear other people sing. “So I knew I would love him. And it’s not like I’m meeting strangers. We just walked towards each other like we’ve always known each other,” he concluded.

Parton’s candid look at their time together prompted the “Walk On By” singer to chime in, “Dear old friends.” It’s worth noting that Parton’s plan to work on this gospel duet took years to form, as she admits to first writing the song “in the late ’80s.”

And it turns out, “it’s a song that stands the test of time” and is “very dear” in Warwick’s heart. The song’s music video is expected to premiere this Friday, with more than enough church vibes for their combined fan base.
