Director James Mangold is explaining the ending of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
Although the fifth film in the franchise marks the last time Harrison Ford will play the titular character, the ending – without giving away too many spoilers – features the actor grabbing his iconic hat, which is hanging from the end of a clothesline.
So does that mean that Indiana Jones isn’t ready to “hang up his hat” after all? Director James Mangold considers what he wants viewers to take away from the ending!
Director James Mangold Talks Harrison Ford’s Future As Indy After ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Ends
MEGAAlthough Hollywood seems to love reboots, there is little chance that the 80-year-old actor will return for another film in the franchise. Although Ford has retired from his adventures as Indiana Jones, the character, it seems, is ready for more.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, director James Mangold said that the character himself has not “given up” and is ready for more adventures, adding, “I don’t think he’s going to stop digging.”
“When he took the hat off the clothesline, I thought it was because, first of all, you’re not supposed to put a hat on a clothesline,” he joked. “And secondly, no, I don’t think he’s done yet. I think that the ending does not mean that the characters will not move on in their lives. It means you feel that you have entered into a good situation with their story.”
Harrison Ford Is Not Ready To Retire… So Neither Is Indiana Jones!

While fans won’t be able to see his story on screen, Mangold already has some ideas about where Indy will go next, now that his family is back in his life.
“I think he will wake up tomorrow and want to do something. But whether he’s going to fight the Nazis through the time portal again, I don’t think so,” he continued. “But I could really imagine him and Marion taking a road trip to some Inca digs or to some digs in Montana or North Dakota and renting a cabin. And I can see he’s really enjoying his life as a retired archaeologist.”
The idea that Indy would keep going actually came from Ford himself, who was hardly ready to retire as he prepared to film season 2 of his Apple TV+ comedy “Shrink” with costar Jason Segel. “Indy and Harrison are so close, and Harrison will never retire, and I don’t think Indy will,” Mangold said.
“He retired as a teacher [in Dial of Destiny], but I don’t think he will retire from being an obsessive student, a thinker of the past and the future, and science and humanity,” he added. “I think when he stops thinking about it, I think it’s over.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge Reveals How She Punched Harrison Ford!

In the new film, Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays a character named Helena Shaw. It doesn’t take the audience long to learn that Indy really is her godfather, though he doesn’t have family on his mind when they reconnect.
At one point in the film, Helena punches her godfather in the face so hard that he knocks him out.
“It’s a brilliant piece, and it’s a very well-written moment. And especially because there are so many fights and left hooks and all that stuff throughout the movie, when he’s just fighting bad guys,” Waller-Bridge told Entertainment Weekly in a separate interview. “But having to equalize the blow to the hero of the film… It’s very proud, because it’s very funny.”
At both screenings she attended, the “Fleabag” star revealed that the audience actually cheered when it happened. “Underneath, it really has heart and emotion. And that’s really a testament to Jim [Mangold, director] and Butterworths [Jez and John-Henry] to write a moment like that,” he added. “I hope the audience understands why he did it.”

The actor also revealed that he managed to pull off many of the physical stunts his character required throughout the film, including crashing a tuk-tuk, which he did by accident.
“I managed quite a few landings and jumping off bits, but none of the real dangerous stunts. But I have to drive a tuk-tuk!” he said, adding, “I did ruin it… which shouldn’t have happened.” He also revealed that he had to jump out of a plane, adding, “And I had to jump into water, and roll under things, and jump over things. So there was a lot to do, and I was literally covered in bruises. Each one is a mark of respect for the day.”
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is now in theaters.
