The WGA writers’ strike is still underway, and Public Enemy director Michael Mann thought crossing the picket line was a good idea.
Michael Mann Blasted Online

The director was spotted by writers and supporters crossing pickets for a possible meeting at a studio. A screenwriter took to social media to call out Mann and slam him in the same post for not supporting the person who had written his film.
“Yesterday, a writer/director who many of us adore ignored the Heat of the Picket line,” began the message. In case you couldn’t tell, the writers used Mann’s movie name to reveal that he’s an over-the-top delinquent.
“Driving to Gate 3 fast, like a Thief or Public Enemy driving a Ferrari to escape from Manhunter or Miami Vice and pulling the In(r)lot Keep of the Fox,” the message continued. “Don’t be a Blackhat, or Guild members will suffer Collateral damage if you don’t join us in the picket line; At least do some Mo’ Honkings while you drive! (That last one was as big a swing as Ali would take.).”
Social Media Splits On Michael Mann

WGA supporters and union members couldn’t believe someone was brave enough to cross the picket line and stand up to the writers.
“Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors alive and has made some of my favorite films, and I’m still interested in seeing his future work, but after putting together the body of work he has and having supported strikes in the past, it scabs. His behavior is so bad, there’s no bones about it.”
Another follower ignored Mann but thought the act was ridiculous. “As someone who doesn’t care about Michael Mann, this discourse is very annoying. Being a scab is bad, simple as that.”
Not everyone agrees that other people’s work should be withheld because of the author. “Don’t think most non-writers should be ashamed of crossing the picket line when their union isn’t on strike; they can lose their jobs/health care because secondary strikes are illegal. Men like Michael Mann, however, who have enough power not to show up, should be made to feel bad.”
The Post Upset Some People

Social media posts alerting the public that Mann crossed the line drew mixed reviews. “I’ll watch that annoying Michael Mann thing all day. They really couldn’t have said it less than horrified,” one follower wrote.
A follower came up with a wild plot wondering if it was illegal for the poster to use Mann’s name. “Is there a reason why you can’t say Michael Mann?” Similar investigations from others followed? “Why can’t they say Michael Mann crossed the picket line?”
“Michael Mann Facts: Michael Mann crossed the picket line.”
The outrage may have been more than Mann or anyone else thought, but the outrage was surprising. “Michael Mann knows nothing about writing, and all his movies are bad because he crossed the picket line.”
