Five Republican senators are urging President Joe Biden to restrict travel between the US and China as the communist country sees an increase in cases of childhood pneumonia.
Senators Marco Rubio, JD Vance, Rick Scott, Tommy Tuberville and Mike Braun called for an “immediate travel ban” because China has a “long history of lying about public health crises,” a letter read on Dec. 1.
The five men cited the COVID-19 pandemic as evidence, saying that China’s “lack of transparency” had “deprived” the US of “vital knowledge” in the past.
“If history is any indication, we should be worried,” the letter reads.
The World Health Organization has asked China to share “detailed information” on the outbreak, which has largely affected children and has caused overcrowding in some of the country’s hospitals.
But the senator said there was no time to wait “waiting for the WHO to take action given its respectable track record [Communist Party of China].”

In addition, cases of childhood pneumonia have appeared in the US, including nearly 150 cases near Cleveland, Ohio, since August. Although health officials say there is no cause for concern, it is not known if the Ohio case is of the same type that struck China.

Pediatric pneumonia has also been on the rise in Massachusetts, but state officials believe it is a common strain of RSV that kills about 10,000 Americans each year.
Federal officials also said they do not currently believe there is a link between the pneumonia cases across the United States and the mysterious illness affecting China.
“We’re seeing about the same number and type of pneumonia cases in children and adults as we typically see this year,” Centers for Disease Control spokesman David Daigle said in a statement to the Post.
“We will continue to closely monitor pneumonia and other respiratory infections and work with local health officials to ensure communities have the tools they need to respond,” he said.
