Dog bite results in ‘extremely rare’ infection, kills Australian mother-of-two

A Perth woman who contracted an “extremely rare bacterial infection” from a dog bite that left her in a coma has tragically died.

Tracy Ridout, a 53-year-old mother of two from Baldivis, was diagnosed with Capnocytophaga canimorsus after her friend’s young German Shepherd “accidentally bit her finger instead of a toy”.

According to his daughter Sophie Ridout, there seemed to be no cause for concern at first.

“It wasn’t violent or anything, he was playing with the dog and accidentally bit his finger instead of the toy,” he told PerthNow.

“He doesn’t think anything just wraps around him.”

Tracy started feeling sick a week later and when Nurofen and Panadol didn’t work, she drove herself to Rockingham General Hospital where she was diagnosed with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, on August 18.

“(It’s) a very rare bacterial infection transmitted from an animal through a bite or lick,” Sophie wrote on a GoFundMe page initially set up to cover medical and funeral costs.

Doctors informed her that the infection had spread to her kidneys, liver and blood and Tracy was transferred to Fiona Stanley where her condition worsened and she was put into an induced coma.

A week later on August 25, doctors told Tracy’s family that there was nothing more they could do to save her.

Sophie and her brother Kieren have spoken out to warn others about seeking immediate medical attention for dog bites.

“Even if it’s just a small bite from a dog, like it was (for Mom), get it checked out,” he said.

According to Sophie, the doctor told her that if her mother had received medical help earlier, the infection might not have developed.

“This disease seems to be very rare, especially to be as severe as it is. One of the experts told us it was the second time he had seen it,” he added.

This bacteria is commonly found in the mouths of cats and dogs, but it rarely causes disease in humans. Symptoms include blisters near the wound, redness, swelling, pain or fever.

People with compromised immune systems and diabetes have a higher risk of infection.
