A brave dog was rescued this week after surviving a terrifying 60-foot fall off a cliff in Michigan and a freezing night alone in the wilderness.
On Wednesday afternoon, three-year-old Dancer let go of his leash and fell off a steep cliff near Miner’s Castle in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the National Park Service (NPS) said.
“After hours of searching the area, Dancer’s owners were unable to locate their dog in the dark and are confident he did not survive the fall,” the NPS press release reads.
Rangers at nearby Pictured Rocks Park received a notification about the missing pet and dispatched a local leash rescue team from Superior High Angle Rescue Professionals (SHARP) to search for the dog around the Lake Superior shoreline.
The next morning, however, three team members from SHARP rescue found Dancer “cold, but alive,” the NPS said.
“Although he had spent the night trying to warm up, he was excited to see the rescuer,” the service wrote alongside a photo of the puppy in the arms of a smiling SHARP team.

Dancer – described as a “professional troublemaker” – has since been reunited with his family and is recovering well, the NPS confirmed.
“With the start of this year’s mild winter, many areas of Pictured Rocks are more accessible than most years. It’s still important to remember to be prepared for slippery and cold conditions that can change quickly,” Chief Ranger Joe Hughes said in a warning to other would-be visitors.
