In the world of Hollywood, where divorce is commonplace, maintaining a marriage for more than five decades is no small feat. However, the legendary singer Dolly Parton is one of those who can be proud of successfully overcoming this trend.

Parton has been married for 57 years to her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, implying that they were together before he became famous and started topping the charts around the world.

The singer shared all about meeting her in her documentary, “Dolly Parton: In Her Own Words.”

He said, “When I first moved to Nashville in 1964, I did dirty laundry because I was in a hurry to move to Nashville from my home in East Tennessee, which was 200 miles away.”

“I’ve never been in a laundromat before. I walked outside, and there was a handsome man driving by the laundromat. And he pulled aside. So we started talking, and we got married two years later,” Parton said.

Although their love for each other is undeniable, the couple’s marriage lacks emotional monogamy. In 2017, Dolly Parton revealed in her book “Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton” that she had hated all kinds of men outside of her marriage.

As for the “open” marriage, he explained it was not physically open.

She said, “I’ve been into some really amazing guys, but Carl knows I’m always coming home, and I don’t have sex with these guys – I just flirt and have fun.”

The singer also mentioned that her husband was involved in flirting, and their actions did not cause jealousy in their marriage. The “Jolene” comedian also emphasized that they never crossed the line of making their relationship with another sexual at any time.

Parton continued: “Yes, it was an open relationship, but not s-xually, and I would kill him if I thought he did that.’ He would shoot me too. At the end of the day, we love each other so much.”

Last month, Parton opened up about why her marriage has lasted this long despite the divorce trend among entertainment stars.

“I think it’s the fact that we’re honest and open, and we have a wicked sense of humor!” the singer revealed on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

She added that her husband has many endearing qualities, such as “crazy,” “funny” and “smart.” Combined with his “great sense of humor from both sides of my family,” it made them perfect for each other. Moreover, they share a “mutual respect” for each other.

Parton also mentioned that in a scenario where they were not romantically involved, she would still admire Dean as a person.

The singer said, “You know, I would have liked him if he wasn’t my husband if he was someone else’s husband, I said, ‘You know that Carl Dean, isn’t he funny? Isn’t he a good guy?’ so think it’s just mutual respect and we just love each other.”

Away from marriage, Parton has no plans to retire from music despite her advancing years.

“I will not retire. I hope I die in the middle of a song on stage one day – and hopefully a song I wrote – but that’s what I hope for,” the “9 to 5” singer said during an appearance on Greatest Hits Radio in July.

After expressing her desire not to leave the music spotlight, Parton admitted that the physical limitations that come with advancing age have caused her to cut back on touring.

“I’m not touring anymore, but I’ll continue to do special shows here and there, like long weekends or festival shows,” the “Coat of Many Colors” singer revealed.

He added, “You have to go so long on tour to make it productive and prosperous, and that’s a lot of time at my age – I don’t have time to waste.”
