In a recent interview, the famous singer-songwriter stressed that she doesn’t feel like she’s “missing out” on having children, admitting that starting a family will take her focus away from her career.
Dolly Parton Says Having Kids Wasn’t ‘One of Those Burning Things’
Parton and her husband Carl Dean first met at a laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1964, and they married two years later.
The couple chose not to have children, with the “Jolene” hitmaker explaining that it wasn’t a “burning desire” for her.

Opening up about whether he regrets the decision, the 77-year-old stated, “I didn’t miss it as much as I thought. When you’re a young couple, you think you’re going to have kids, but it’s not one of those burning things for me. I have my career and my music and I’m traveling.”
She explained that if she were a mother, she would “stay home” with her children, and “make myself worry about them.”
The Grammy Award winner also stated that bringing children into today’s society wouldn’t sit well with her given “everything that’s going on.” In his words to Saga Exceptional:
“With everything that’s going on, I don’t feel like bringing a child into this world right now! I always said God did not allow me to have children so that all children would be mine.”
Earlier this year, Parton gave fans a rare glimpse into what makes her nearly six-decade marriage work for her and her husband. He began the conversation by explaining, “I think I’ve talked about pretty much everything over the years with Carl, and we’re different people. But we just work so well together.”
As for the dynamic that Dean brings to their love life, the “Jolene” singer detailed, “He’s a loner, so he doesn’t really like being around anyone but me, when I’m at home — I mean, he’s not one to go out there and socialize as much. He likes to live on the farm, take care of the property as he has for years, and then, we just have to talk about a lot of things.”

In addition, Parton mentioned that her husband’s preference for a quiet life matched his appreciation of music, which contributed to their long-lasting romance. He further declared:
“We have a lot of love and respect for each other, and I think the key to it all – we both have a crazy sense of humor, so we have fun.”
Parton Intended to Die While Performing for Her Fans
As Parton continues to enjoy life without children, the “Joyful Noise” star has no plans to stop music despite her advanced age. In July, he insisted that he would “never retire” from music while stressing that he would “hopefully die in the middle of a song on stage one day.”
Following the passionate declaration, the actress discussed how the physical constraints of age have affected her tour plans.
“I’m not touring anymore, but I’ll continue to do special shows here and there, like long weekends or festival shows. You have to go so long on tour to make it productive and prosperous, and that’s a lot of time at my age – I don’t have time to waste,” Parton shared.
He also touched on his desire to invest more time in Hollywood and has plans to bring his life story to the silver screen in the near future. About that, he communicated, “I want to have my own story called The Life of Many Colors where I have a whole TV series in my life.”
