Donald Glover Shares Update On ‘Star Wars’ Series About Lando Calrissian

Actor Donald Glover can’t wait to return to the galaxy far, far away!

The “Atlanta” star appeared as a young Lando Calrissian in the box office hit “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Although it didn’t do well at the box office, rumors are rife that Glover will reprise his role as Lando for the Disney+ series.

While no updates on the series were announced at the Star Wars Celebration 2023 event in London, Glover hinted that Star Wars fans may still have reason to hope for its return.

During an interview with GQ about his most iconic character, the “Community” star couldn’t help but mention “Star Wars” icon Lando Calrissian. Although “Solo” came out in 2018 and the series was first announced in 2020, it seems that the project is still in development three years later.

“I mean I’d love to play Lando again. It was a fun time to be him,” Glover said. ‘It just has to be the right way to do it.” Glover added, “I’m not interested in doing anything that’s just going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it can be.”

He gave fans reason to hope that he and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, who first announced the series, are still working on the show, adding, “So yeah, I mean, we’re talking about it.” He later joked that he couldn’t say more without Kennedy “hunting him down,” so it sounds like there must be something in the works!

In 2018, shortly after the film aired, Glover talked about reprising his role as Lando Calrissian in “Solo: A Star Wars Story” Town Hall.

“It will always be fun to be Lando again,” he said at the time. “The film, I think, is wide open. This part of the universe without… I think like with the Skywalkers, it’s hard because it’s almost like the Bible.”

“There’s a story you have to tell, and that’s the lineage of the family,” he continued. “I feel like here, yeah, we’re like hunters and gamblers and space pirates, basically, so you can do more and have more fun.”

Filmmaker Ron Howard opened up about the possibility of a “Solo” sequel earlier this year. In January, the veteran director told NME, that he wasn’t feeling too optimistic about the possibility of another sequel making it to the big screen.

“The only talk I’m aware of about a sequel to Solo is coming from fans at this point,” Howard said. “I don’t think it’s Lucasfilm’s priority, as I understand it.” Even so, he also makes sure to add “never say never” when it comes to projects set in a galaxy far, far away.

“The people at Lucasfilm love the fans and really listen, so I would never say no,” he added. “But I’m not aware of any concrete plans right now to extend the story or address that particular set of characters.”

Speaking of “never say never,” actress Daisy Ridley is back to reprise her role as Rey in the new “Star Wars” movie directed by “Ms. Marvel filmmaker” Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the film will be set 15 years after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which concluded the nine-episode Skywalker Saga.

James Mangold and Dave Filoni will also create a new film focusing on the beginnings of the Jedi and the New Republic. Filoni’s film is said to be in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” and the upcoming “Ahsoka,” which will premiere on Disney+ in August 2023.

The news was first announced on Friday, April 7, right at the start of the Star Wars Celebration 2023 event in London. The event also gave fans a first look at several Disney+ series, including “The Acolyte,” “Skeleton Crew,” and the second season of “Andor.”
