Superstar Drake and fellow artist The Weeknd turned down the Grammy Awards.
The pair chose not to submit any of their songs for consideration, once again continuing their boycott of music awards ceremonies.
The Weeknd first announced in 2021 that he would not be attending the next edition after his hit album “After Hours” was rejected by the Recording Academy. Instead, Drake withdrew his nomination for the 2022 edition, apparently in solidarity with The Weeknd, with whom he has collaborated several times.
Both artists have in the past expressed their dissatisfaction with the Grammy selection process. Several other musicians have also boycotted the event for the same reason.

Per vibration, Drake and The Weeknd are boycotting the Grammys again. Toronto artists have had a great musical year but have chosen not to enter any of their projects for consideration or possible nominations for the 2023 edition of the ceremony.
Both artists released solo albums – Drake’s “Honestly, Nevermind” and The Weeknd’s “Dawn FM” – that were eligible for various categories. In addition, the pair skipped to submit their hit singles, such as “Sticky” and “Out of Time.”
The two Canadian artists have chosen to take over the 65-year-old institution for the second year in a row. Both musicians have previously complained about the Recording Academy’s methods of selecting and awarding artists.
Although none of their projects appeared on the official ballot, Drake and The Weeknd were featured on several projects with other artists, which were submitted for consideration. This means the pair still have a chance to win a Grammy even though the Recording Academy won’t have a chance to consider their personal work.
The Weeknd Complains About Showrunners

The Weeknd’s beef with the Recording Academy begins in 2021. The artist’s smash album “After Hours” was snubbed at the ceremony even though the project was tipped to win several awards due to the singer’s famous and record-breaking hit single “Blinding Lights.”
After the event was held, The Weeknd announced his decision to boycott future Grammys, suggesting he was deeply displeased with the humiliation. At that time, he told New York Times“I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” citing that the Recording Academy has a “secret committee” that improperly influences the selection of nominees and winners.
As for how he feels about the insult, The Weeknd opened up The Billboard in an interview in 2021. He told the publication, per Page Six, “It just hit me out of nowhere. I definitely felt … I felt something. I don’t know if it’s sad or angry. I think it’s just confusion. I just want an answer. Like, ‘What happened?’”

Meanwhile, Drake’s dissatisfaction with the Grammys began after the 2017 ceremony, where his pop single “Hotline Bling” only earned nominations for Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Rap Song. Despite eventually winning several awards, the singer complained that his songs were stereotyped as rap instead of being nominated in the pop category.
In 2021, the rapper aired his displeasure with The Weeknd being snubbed by the Recording Academy.
He said at that time, per many people, “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be surprised every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what was once the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to current and future artists.”
The following year, he withdrew his nominations for the album “Certified Lover Boy,” in the best rap album category, and “Way 2 Sexy,” which was the best rap performance.
Other Artists Have Turned Down Grammy Awards

Before boycotting the ceremony in 2022, Drake had received 47 nominations and won four Grammys, while The Weeknd had just 13 nominations. It is unknown at this time if their current perspective on the Grammys will change. Given its current state, there is a good chance that they will reject future editions.
Not only Drake and The Weeknd have expressed displeasure with the procedures of the Recording Academy. Although they were nominated for many awards, stars like Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar chose not to attend the 2019 ceremony.
The next edition of the Grammys will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 5, 2023.
