Dramatic video shows Coast Guard rescue Leo the Golden Retriever after plunging over 300-foot Oregon cliff

The US Coast Guard made a daring rescue to ferry a Golden Retriever to safety on New Year’s Day after he plunged more than 300 feet over a sharp cliff — the second such incident at an Oregon state park in just seven months.

Leo had been ahead of his two owners and their other pups at Ecola State Park around 2:45 p.m. when he fell over the cliff onto the rocky shore of Cannon Beach below.

The drop – the height of the Statue of Liberty – can only be accessed by pushing down from the hiking trail.

The local fire department had just installed their pulley system when the Coast Guard helicopter arrived at the edge of the steep cliff.

Dramatic footage of the rescue shows the 3-year-old puppy curled up on the slim beach with his body pressed against the large rocks on the beach.

The injured dog was motionless as his rescuer, who swam to shore after being lowered into the water by a USCG helicopter, slowly approached.

The rescuers strapped Leo into a basket and lifted him to the safety of the helicopter.

“This is your first dog rescue, Jason?” the pilot was heard asking the rescuer after he crawled back into the helicopter.

“Saving the first dog,” answered the rescue swimmer.

Back on solid ground, Leo was brought back to his owners, who greeted their beloved pup with warm blankets and hugs of gratitude for the USCG hero.

“Wow! Hugs all the way,” a team member is heard saying in the video.

“Love it!” reply to another.

Leo was rushed to the vet with a collapsed lung, a bruised lung, several cuts and bruises, a broken canine tooth and a broken jaw, according to a fundraiser set up by his family.

The canine spent a night in hospital, where he underwent surgery, and needed wires in his jaw to repair three broken bones.

If not, the lucky child is in good condition and happy to be home with his family.

“He has the best temperament of any dog we know. Leo is Remy’s big brother and can’t wait to feel better so he can go for walks and play with Remy,” the fundraiser said.

The horrific accident is the second time a canine has defied death after falling over a 300-foot drop.

In June, a German Shepard was transported to safety after diving onto a rocky beach.

The Oregon Parks Department could not immediately say whether the two pups had followed a marked trail or if they had forged their own trail along the treacherous cliff.

Dogs are required to be leashed most of the time at Ecola State Park, located about 80 miles northwest of Portland along the Oregon coast.

“Although the beach is beautiful, it is not completely safe. We want to remind everyone to keep dogs on a leash while hiking unless otherwise stated ‘Dogs Allowed Off Leash’ on the state park website,” warned Cannon Beach Fire Rescue, one of four agencies that responded to Leo’s New Year’s Day rescue.
