Drew Barrymore ‘Owns Decision’ For Filming Amid Strike

After receiving some backlash for starting filming season 4 of “The Drew Barrymore Show” amid the Guild of America, or WGA, strike, host Drew Barrymore has issued a response taking “full responsibility” for the decision.

Barrymore took to social media to explain her reasoning and apologize for anyone affected by her decision.

Barrymore sympathetically explained in a video shared on Instagram why she decided to start filming despite the ongoing WGA strike.

“I believe there is nothing I can do or say at this time to make it all right. I want to own the decision so it’s not a PR covered situation, and I’ll just take full responsibility for my actions. I know there is nothing I can do that will make this okay for those who don’t fit. I fully accept. I understand completely,” he explained holding back his emotions.

“There are many reasons why this is so complicated, and I just want everyone to know my intentions were never in a place to disappoint or hurt anyone. It’s not who I am.”

The actress and talk show host went on to explain that she has been through many “ups and downs” in life and this was one of them. He apologized to the writer and to the union for his decision and said he took “responsibility” for the decision.

“I don’t know what to say because sometimes when things are so difficult, it’s hard to make decisions from that place so all I can say is that I want to accept responsibility,” he explained. “And no, I don’t have a PR machine behind this. My decision to come back to the show, I don’t want to hide behind people, so I’m not going to, and I’m not going to gloss over this with bells and whistles and publicity and corporate rhetoric. I’m just going to stand out there and accept and take responsibility.”

Barrymore instead of telling her “why” to help people understand why she decided to cross the picket line to film the new season of her talk show.

“Well, I certainly could not have expected this kind of attention, and we will not break the rules and will abide by them. I want to do this because like I said, this is bigger than me and there are other people’s jobs online,” he explained.

“And since launching live in a pandemic, I just wanted to make a show that was there for people in a sensitive time. And I weighed the scales and I thought, if we can continue during the global pandemic, and everything that the world has experienced throughout 2020, why would this marginalize us? So, I just want to put one foot in front of the other and make a show that’s there for the people, regardless of anything else that’s going on in the world because that’s when I think we all need something that wants to be there, to be very realistic in very realistic time. So that’s my reason.”

It didn’t take long before followers jumped into the comments section to leave their thoughts on his decision and apology. The comments section is a mixed bag of support and more reactions.

“As a user, I can understand that there are MANY other people working on your show than the writers who were directly affected by the strike. Everything will work out!” one person wrote, supporting his decision.

Another added, “Camera crews also need work, stage crews and others, it’s not just about writers. You give that person a job and that’s great. There will always be someone pointing the finger but you have done well. They have to pay for their homes and families, you made a good decision.”

And then there are the comments that don’t support the decision.

“You are not taking responsibility here as far as reinforcing the misguided decision you made to cross the picket line. I don’t think anyone cares about your intentions as much as they do your action plan to fix it,” wrote one.

“So are you apologizing but going to continue to be scabs and force your crew to be scabs? Because, let’s face it, crew members who want to continue to stand with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA will be replaced if they don’t screw with you. Don’t sit here and cry like you’re helping them when, in reality, you’re forcing them to choose between their jobs or standing with the union,” wrote another.

Shortly after it was announced that “The Drew Barrymore Show” would return with a new episode on September 18 by CBS, Barrymore took to Instagram to share her thoughts on returning during the strike.

“I also made the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, which may have my name on it, but this is bigger than just me,” he said in his announcement. “I own this choice.”

Many left comments about the results. Popular TikToker Elyse Myers was one of them writing, “Please, I strongly urge you to reconsider. This will hurt your writers in the long run and will affect them far beyond the show.” Others shared the same sentiment.

“Would you walk past your own writers on the picket line? Disappointing,” wrote another.
