Drew Carey Talks Closure After Justice Was Served For Ex-Fiancée’s Murder

Drew Carey has closed the chapter on the murder of his ex-fiancee, Amie Harwick.

The game show host revealed that he found peace after Harwick’s ex, Gareth Pursehouse, was found guilty and subsequently sentenced for his brutal 2023 murder.

When Carey met Harwick at a Hollywood gathering in 2017, they hit it off, and Carey managed to get his contact details. A fast and furious romance followed, resulting in their engagement in 2018.

Although the relationship ended that same year, Carey still felt deep pain when her ex-fiancé tragically lost his life, succumbing to blunt force trauma, in February 2020.

Afterward, law enforcement accused Pursehouse, Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, of the burglary and her murder, claiming he waited outside the therapist’s apartment until she returned before attacking her inside her home.

Pursehouse was eventually found guilty of Harwick’s murder after he choked and threw him over the third-floor balcony of his Hollywood Hills home in September 2023.

However, until December of the same year he received a life sentence, according to Page Six.

While the sentence devastated Carey, it also brought him something he had avoided for years – closure. Speaking about it, the comedian stated:

“I can barely remember the man’s name – that’s how much I’ve cut him out of my life – but since the last sentence, it feels like we’ve all taken a breather and finally been able to move on.”

As Carey added, during a recent interview, “The whole process is over now, and there’s nothing more to do and nothing more to worry about. Just speaking for myself, it’s a bit overwhelming.”

Harwick’s Parents Ask Court to Make Them Executors of His Life Estate

In addition to Carey’s loss of composure, the aftermath of Harwick’s death also led viewers to learn that his estate is worth $1.4 million. Probate documents, filed by the 38-year-old’s parents, Tom Allen Harwick and Penelope Arlene Harwick, noted the figure and asked a judge to grant them authority as executors of their daughter’s estate.

Since Harwick died without a will, filings obtained by The Blast reveal that the law has automatically made his parents the beneficiaries of his estate.

Parents Tom and Penelope also state that their daughter owns personal property worth $135,000 and owns real estate worth $1,365,000, possibly referring to the property she owns in Los Angeles.

Drew Carey Almost Ended His Life Twice Due to Depression

Amid Harwick’s family dealing with his death, Carey opened up about her other struggles, including depression and the two attempts she made to end her life. He did just that when he joined the host of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace” earlier this year.

Explaining where his mind was during the first suicidal episode when he was 18, the longtime “The Price Is Right” host shared:

“I think a suicide attempt is a call for help. I was so mad that everyone was having fun. I remember that. I remember walking down the stairs, and everyone was drinking, and I was like, ‘What are they happy about?’ I’m just mad because they’re so happy. I’m just bored with my life and [thought]who will miss me?’”

Although she managed to overcome these dark feelings twice, Carey admits to her consistent struggle with pessimistic thinking as she often wonders, “who’s going to miss me.”

Despite the recurring thoughts, Drew Carey reassured fans of his mental stability, which he attributed in part to his time at Marine training camp. He emphasized that the program gave him “three meals a day” and a sense of “purpose,” in contrast to feeling “broken, lost, and sleeping on my brother’s couch.”

As The Blast reports, his mental health also continues to improve through reading self-help books and dealing with past insecurities through stand-up comedy. Recounting his ongoing struggle with depression, the “King of the Hill” actor stated:

“I’m still depressed, often, just like everyone else. But it’s not that bad. Just because you’re a celebrity and have money doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen to you or you don’t have bad days. Everyone is a person.”
