Drew Carey Talks Mental Health Struggles And Two Suicide Attempts

Drew Carey opens up about the scars hidden behind her bright smile.

The outspoken personality recently reflected on the darkest days of her mental health journey, including why she tried to end her life twice. The host of “The Price Is Right” has not given up on sharing his pain, imploring fans to remember that celebrities are human too.

Drew Carey’s Suicide Attempt Is A Cry For Help

Carey became emotional during Max’s latest appearance on “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace,” where he discussed his mental health and how bleak his life is. During a years-long battle with depression, he tried to end his life twice – when he was 18 and in his early 20s.

“I think a suicide attempt is a call for help,” the comedian explained before recalling his first suicide attempt. The unfortunate incident occurred at a fraternity party, where his negative emotions had risen uncontrollably.

“I was so angry because everyone was having a good time. I remember that. I remember walking down the stairs, and everyone was drinking, and I was like, ‘What are they so happy about?'” Carey recalled, adding: “I was just mad because they were so happy. I’m just bored with my life and [thought]who will miss me?’”

Despite twice overcoming these negative emotions, Carey admits pessimistic thoughts occasionally plague her mind. “I still have a lot of that. Like, the who-will-miss-me kind,” he explained, adding:

“Many times I thought to myself, like if I die, I’ll just burn my body. No funeral and nothing to do with, like, all my memorabilia and stuff. You can burn it and give it away. Like, who cares?”

Carey assured fans that he is in a better place mentally, crediting the time he spent in training camp for the Marines as part of the reason for his stability. He noted the program gave him “three meals a day” and “purpose” compared to being “broken, lost, and sleeping on my brother’s couch.”

Entertainment Weekly reported that his mental stability improved by reading self-help books and that he got rid of his past insecurities through stand-up comedy. Although she has changed significantly from her younger self, Carey emphasized that depression is a constant battle and asked fans to understand saying:

“I’m still depressed, often, just like everyone else. But it’s not that bad. I mean, just because you’re a celebrity and you have money doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen to you or you don’t have bad days. Everyone is a person.”

“I’m just a regular guy from Cleveland. My girlfriend tied me to the bed one leg at a time, just like everyone else,” Carey concluded, referencing a joke he often repeated while hosting “The Price Is Right.”

Drew Carey’s Ex-Fiancé Was Killed Four Years Ago

Four years before opening up about her mental health issues, Carey made headlines about her late ex-fiancée Amie Harwick. The sex therapist was killed in February 2020, leaving no will and an estate worth $1.4 million.

According to legal documents filed by the deceased’s parents — Tom Allen Harwick and Penelope Arlene Harwick — they want to be named executors of their daughter’s estate. They state he has $135,000 in personal property and owns $1,365,000 in real estate, which is most likely a property he owns in LA.

Their move to gain control of their late daughter’s estate comes weeks after she was found dead after allegedly being thrown from her 3rd floor balcony. According to the LAPD, they arrived at the therapist’s home after responding to a report of a “female screaming.”

Law enforcement officials said there were signs of forced entry and a struggle inside Amie’s home, suggesting she fought with the perpetrators before being thrown from the balcony. Her ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, was arrested as the perpetrator and charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors accused him of “lying in wait” when Amie entered his home before the fight broke out. Before her death, the therapist had filed several restraining orders against her ex-boyfriend and accused him of domestic violence.

Her allegations were severe, claiming Pursehouse “choked me, suffocated me, pushed me against the wall, kicked me, threw me to the ground with force…slammed my head on the ground, and punched me with a closed fist.”
