Drone strike sets fire to Russian factory making missile microchips, Ukraine says

A drone attacked and set fire to a Russian factory that produces microchips used in missile production on the outskirts of Moscow on Friday, Ukrainian military intelligence claimed.

Videos shared on social media showed thick columns of smoke rising in the suburb of Lyubertsy where the factory is located.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed in a post on his Telegram channel that the Russian capital’s air defense system shot down the drone.

“Based on initial reports, there were no casualties or damage. Emergency services are working at the scene,” he wrote.

But Andriy Yusov, a representative of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, dismissed the mayor’s version of events as a lie.

“Sobyanin lies to everyone, [Russia’s] air defenses don’t drop anything. The Tomilino Electronics Factory in Lyubertsy caught fire. This is a facility that Russia uses to produce electronics for their missiles,” Yusov was quoted by Ukraine’s RBC news channel as saying.

Drone attacks have occurred across Russia this week, including in Kursk and Belgorod regions and in the city of Pskov, which is more than 430 miles from Ukraine’s border with Russia.

Ukraine has not typically claimed responsibility for drone strikes in Russia, although Kyiv officials have been known to publicly express satisfaction over them.

On Wednesday, another microchip factory in the Bryansk region was the target of a drone strike at night.

The unmanned aircraft was said to have been shot down by air defenses and crashed at the Kremny EL plant, reported Telegram news channel Mash, which shared footage of a loud explosion that lit up the sky.

The fire broke out in one of the buildings on the plant’s sprawling campus — one of Russia’s largest microelectronics factories that employs about 2,000 workers, according to military blogger Romanov Light.
