The devastating wildfires that have swept through parts of Maui have claimed more lives than initially expected, leaving communities heartbroken and searching for answers. The death toll is now put at 115, with nearly 400 missing or unaccounted for, as officials now expand their search efforts beyond land, combing the seas in hopes of finding any survivors or those who died, per ABC News.

In an update shared on the district’s website, it was revealed that the fire, which is still ongoing in some parts of the island, is between 85-90% containment rate, as the Maui Fire Department warned that complete extinguishment in the interior may ” take which is long” because of the wide spread land.

Officials said they did not expect the death toll to rise in the final stages of the search, as 45 of the 115 bodies had been identified. Calls for DNA samples to help in the identification of the bodies have also been made as efforts to return to normalcy continue.
