The 65th annual Grammys was an unforgettable event for many reasons. One of the best highlights of the night was watching the “Set Fire To The Rain” singer blush at Johnson’s surprise appearance.
Despite having many awards, including an Oscar, Adele got a surprise when she met her favorite celebrity for the first time. In an exclusive interview with Variety, the “Jumanji” star opened up about how the special night came about.
The California native teamed up with the Grammy contestant to brighten up the Tottenham native’s life. “We want to do something special for Adele,” the father of three told the outlet, “I know that she is a huge fan of mine and has made it clear many times.”
However, Adele’s feelings are not biased, as the “Baywatch” star admitted to being a fan of the singer. “I’ve got to tell you, I’m a huge fan of his too — his music, his travels, his openness and his directness in the way he talks. I have always admired him.”
Given his love for the English songwriter, the former wrestler decided to kill two birds with one stone. He originally planned to attend the award show with his beautiful wife, Lauren Hashian, and decided to surprise the Golden Globe awardee.
Despite working on her upcoming film “Red One,” the MTV Generation Award winner redoubled her efforts in getting things ready in time for the event. As soon as Grammys fans heard the 50-year-old would be attending, Ben Winston, executive producer of the award show, came up with the idea of surprising Adele at the show.
Thanks to Winston’s plan, the “Black Adam” star was finally able to replace the “Hello” singer. According to Johnson, they bounced around ideas for a week, trying to create the perfect surprise for the 34-year-old.
“The key to a surprise like that is to keep it a surprise,” explained the father of three. “The Grammys and I worked really hard to make sure Adele was really surprised at this moment, and she really was.”
The sweet moment went smoothly thanks to Grammys host Trevor Noah, who introduced the couple during his opening monologue. Johnson greeted Adele with a big smile and a bear hug, a moment she fondly remembers. “It was a great surprise, and I got to chat with her a little bit and her boyfriend, Rich Paul,” the entertainer said.
The little time they spent together sitting at the same table took Rock and Adele from strangers to best friends. As fate would have it, he got to present the Grammy to his new BFF.
“I got on stage, and I opened the Grammy envelope, and it said ‘Adele.’ So that’s why I can say, ‘Get up here, good friend, Adele!’ It was a special night,” said the 50-year-old before hailing the Tottenham native as an inspirational icon.
Adele Gives Emotional Acceptance Speech At Grammys
Adele won the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance thanks to her hit song, “Easy On Me.” The 34-year-old received a gold-plated gramophone from Johnson and shed tears as he gave his acceptance speech.
During her speech, the “Someone Like You” artist paused to give a shout out to her beau, Paul Richie. “Oh my god, Richie, he said, ‘don’t cry, if you win anything tonight, don’t cry!’ and here I cry,” lamented the singer in the voice of the sports agent.
Adele revealed that she wrote the first verse of “Easy On Me” in the shower as she chose to change Angelo’s life for the better.
