Not long after it was picked up for a second season, Dwyane Wade opened up about his hosting duties on the TBS game show, “The Cube.” The British game show, brought to America by TBS, focuses on challenging contestants with mental and physical tasks they must complete while confined in a cube. Any contestant who can complete all the tasks while in the bracket can walk away with the $250,000 prize.

In addition to hosting “The Cube,” Wade also has executive producer rights, all of which have been supported by his wife and actress Gabrielle Union. Speaking to Business Traveler about his forays into the world of entertainment, the 40-year-old said:

“Being a host is one of my favorite roles. “I love hosting backyard dinners. My wife is the same way. So when it comes to The Cube, I just bring people to my house, which is the stage. And I got to know them at a game, just like I did at dinner.”

Wade added that he does his job as a game show host but as someone who has to “show the fun of the game” while engaging and connecting with the contestants. As someone who grew up in Chicago, the father of four got to watch game shows like “Jeopardy!,” “Double Dare,” Supermarket and his personal favorite, “The Bozo Show.”

Wade recounts watching children scramble to win money by successfully dropping ping pong balls into six buckets every morning before school. That was the beginning of his dream of hosting a game show. Despite his big dreams and results, SI points out that the three-time NBA champion was hesitant to accept the job of frontman for “The Cube.”

His doubts may have something to do with the amount of preparation he needs to do to prepare for this new path. The former Miami Heat shooting guard had to work with an acting coach and voice coach and train for over a month to prepare himself for the task. Wade told the sports outlet:

“Bro, I have all the hesitation. It’s a new kind of anxiety and nervousness. But finally, when the contestants come out, that’s when I’m comfortable, talking to people and talking to people I’ve never done otherwise.”

Luckily all her hard work paid off, and she has built lasting relationships with some of the show’s contestants, chatting with them occasionally on social media.

After promising “to love unconditionally, to laugh with you, and to wipe away your tears,” Union told her lover that she would be by his side “through every twist and turn.” Wade’s voice soon takes over and describes love as “waking up for you [Union] smile.” Union had more to say to her husband as she wrote in the caption:

“It’s been 8 years married to my best friend, and a lifetime to go. There have been tears and tantrums, triumphs and overwhelming gratitude for our love. I love your evolution and your willingness to look at yourself FIRST before pointing any fingers finger.”

After noting how the 13-time NBA All-Star can “throw caution to the wind” and lead their families without regret, Union prayed for a journey “filled with joy and laughter and compassion and grace.” The emotional post has received over two million plays and 200k likes.
