Ed Sheeran Denies Claims Of Invite To Perform At King Charles’ Coronation: ‘Never Turned It Down’

Ed Sheeran has denied claims he turned down an invitation to perform at King Charles III’s Coronation Concert on Sunday, May 7, at Windsor Castle.

While earlier reports confirmed the English singer and several others were asked to perform at the landmark event, Sheeran now insists he never accepted.

In a chat on SiriusXM earlier this month, he shared his intention to “set the record straight” regarding reports that he had turned down the opportunity to sing, stating:

“A lot of people tell me how random it is [Katy Perry and Lionel Richie] will sing at the Coronation of the King… I want to clarify something.”

He added that no one had ever asked him to perform before explaining, “I figured if they went online and went ‘what’s Ed doing on May 6,’ they’d go ‘oh he’s playing in Dallas,’ so I think that’s what happen.”

The 32-year-old insisted that he “never turned it down” because he wasn’t asked. Nevertheless, he was excited to attend the “historic” ceremony.

Although fans unfortunately didn’t get to see her perform, the concert was apparently in the hands of full-time “American Idol” judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

The duo are joined by fellow singers like Paloma Faith, Olly Murs, and Take That, while several others, including Sheeran, are said to have turned down the chance to join them. One of those stars was the iconic Kylie Minogue, who was unable to perform because she was advised that her fellow Australians would not appreciate her due to the rise of constitutional reform months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

Other performers said to have turned down offers from Buckingham Palace include Elton John, the Spice Girls, Adele, Harry Styles and Robbie Williams.

For Adele and Sheeran were previously placed at the top of the list of performers for the night, but it was reported that although the “Shape Of You” singer had a valid reason to decline, he did not. Sheeran will reportedly perform in Texas the day before the Coronation Concert, while the “Hello” singer has no show lined up for him.

According to an insider: “There was a team set up to get the talent signed up, so they approached the two but got a reply saying they weren’t available. They are giants in the showbiz industry. And quintessentially British but also known around the world. Very humiliating.”

While Sheeran delighted millions of fans with a historic performance at the coronation, he seemed to be doing his best to support the royal celebrations. On Sunday, May 7, Sheeran was joined by Alanis Morissette as a guest judge on “American Idol,” replacing Richie and Perry.

The pair teamed up with Luke Bryan for the show after being chosen ahead of the Royal ceremony. Despite this, Richie and Perry still checked in on the show with live updates from the celebrations in Britain — with surprise cameos from King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Meanwhile, the replacement players are scheduled to take part in the program’s “616” episode, where the US will vote for the top 5 remaining contestants.
