Eerie video shows car that raced off Virginia Beach pier now underwater — officials unsure if anyone was inside

Scary new footage shows a car that mysteriously raced off a Virginia Beach pier now adrift in the Atlantic — as officials still don’t know if anyone is inside.

The shocking incident recorded by passers-by on Saturday showed the vehicle speeding along Jalan 14 Fishing Pier with its brake lights flashing periodically before flying into the ocean.

It was eventually found upside down 17 feet below the surface, with rough conditions making it impossible for divers to safely retrieve it or know if there were bodies inside, authorities said.

Video captured by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) shows the car swaying with the current in the murky water.

“The ROV was unable to provide a clear image or identification mark,” the Chesapeake Fire Department wrote in a post with the short clip.

Virginia Beach Police Sgt. Brian Ricardo told reporters that the vehicle was “unstable” because it was on its roof.

“The fear for us is not that it will drift away but that one of the divers will be entangled in the car,” he said, reported WTKR.

“No one wants to bring a solution to this matter more than us,” Ricardo said. “We’re just as frustrated as everyone else because we can’t get in the water, and we can’t do anything to get it going.”

He said the Bureau of Investigation was also investigating the possibility of death after the car crashed into an iron fence at about 7am on Saturday and sped along the jetty before plunging.

Virginia Beach firefighters responded within four minutes and a rescue swimmer tried to locate the vehicle and anyone who might have been inside, Ricardo said, WAVY reported.

When the police special operations team arrived, the firemen had already been pulled out of the water, he said, adding that his officers located the car using side scan sonar.

“The ocean current measured 3.9 knots, 4X outside the safety parameters for VBPD divers,” police said in a statement Monday.

“Strong currents & very low visibility made it too dangerous for divers to navigate & assess the area safely, especially near the submerged SUV swaying on its roof in the turbulent current,” he added.

On Sunday, a crew from Crofton Industries contracted by the police tried to recover the vehicle but had to postpone the effort because the waves were too strong, according to WAVY.

“They broke two shackles holding their crane in place, and they severed the mooring line from the crane barge to their dive boat. That’s how violent it is out there,” said Ricardo.

“If you’re standing in front of the ocean and the current hits you and you fall while you’re standing in your bathing suit, imagine wearing 90 pounds of diving gear,” he added, 13NewsNow reported.

Rescue crews will determine when it is safe to resume recovery efforts, officials said.

“The goal of this mission remains to safely recover the vehicle, reunite any and all occupants with their loved ones, and preserve the integrity of all evidence,” police said.
