He was born on October 11, 1884, in Manhattan, New York City. He was born to parents named Anna Rebecca Hall and Elliott Roosevelt. She is known by her middle name which is Eleanor since childhood. Through her father, Eleanor Roosevelt was a niece of President Theodore Roosevelt.

On her mother’s side, she is the niece of Valentine Gill ‘Vallie’ Hall III and Edward Ludlow Hall, the tennis champion. She was fondly called Grandma by her mother because she used to act in a serious way when she was little.
