Ellen Pompeo has announced her retirement from the long-running “Grey’s Anatomy.”
The actor has been on the ABC medical series since 2005, earning a huge fan following for playing the lead character, Dr. Meredith Grey. He finally announced the end of his watch on the show after years of expressing his desire to exit the project — or even take on a behind-the-scenes role.

Along with a photo of her looking intently at the camera in a yellow turtleneck and gold hoops, Pompeo shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. He wrote:
“I am forever grateful and humbled by the love and support you all have shown me, Meredith GRAY and the show for 19 seasons!”
He praised the people who have been with him for nearly two decades because “none of it … would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all made the ride so much fun and ICONIC!!”
The Golden Globe Award nominee declared her love and appreciation for her fans before concluding, “It’s not your first time on a rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit. With love and infinite gratitude XoE [praying hands and red heart emojis].”
Since he made the announcement, it has received an outpouring of love, garnering nearly two million likes in the first 14 hours. The Blast reported in May that Pompeo said he wasn’t worried about the possibility of her exiting the medical drama because she believed Memorial Gray Sloan would go on easily without Meredith Grey.

So, when Zola finds a school for gifted children that she likes in Boston, her mother decides to accept the Boston job that Jackson Avery (played by Jesse Williams) offered her earlier. The deal means that the beloved doctor will join Jackson in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.
