Ellen Pompeo Admires ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans In Exit Tribute: ‘You All Are RIDERS’

Ellen Pompeo has announced her retirement from the long-running “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The actor has been on the ABC medical series since 2005, earning a huge fan following for playing the lead character, Dr. Meredith Grey. He finally announced the end of his watch on the show after years of expressing his desire to exit the project — or even take on a behind-the-scenes role.

Along with a photo of her looking intently at the camera in a yellow turtleneck and gold hoops, Pompeo shared a heartfelt message on Instagram. He wrote:

“I am forever grateful and humbled by the love and support you all have shown me, Meredith GRAY and the show for 19 seasons!”

He praised the people who have been with him for nearly two decades because “none of it … would have been possible without the best fans in the world. You all are RIDERS and you all made the ride so much fun and ICONIC!!”

The Golden Globe Award nominee declared her love and appreciation for her fans before concluding, “It’s not your first time on a rollercoaster… you know the show must go on and I’ll definitely be back to visit. With love and infinite gratitude XoE [praying hands and red heart emojis].”

Since he made the announcement, it has received an outpouring of love, garnering nearly two million likes in the first 14 hours. Also, 31k+ comments were dropped, with one person writing, “gray without Meredith? can’t imagine! It’s never going to be the same… I’ve always said as long as Meredith is there, I’ll be there too & but I’m excited about your new project and hope to see you again.”

Another fan posted a lengthy comment that began, “I’m devastated! @ellenpompeo YOUR show has been a part of my life and a big part of who I am. I watched when the first episode aired and instantly fell in love with Grey’s Anatomy. I have lived life with the characters of the show, cried and laughed together.”

The reviewer praised Meredith for her “toughness, tenacity and determination combined with her compassionate and motherly nature,” which made them “who I am today.” Additionally, Meridith teaches them that “it’s okay to be yourself, to stand up for yourself and others, and to go after what you want no matter the mountains in your way.” They finished by advising Pompeo, “Take your time to heal and come back stronger than ever.”

Stars like Luke Baines, Kate Walsh, Dr. Aviva Romm, Jodie Turner-Smith, Harry Josh, Dominick Thompson and Emmanuel Acho also spoke.

The Blast reported in May that Pompeo said he wasn’t worried about the possibility of her exiting the medical drama because she believed Memorial Gray Sloan would go on easily without Meredith Grey.

According to the 53-year-old, “Me and Shonda, I think—we’ll see, we’ll see. Trying to reinvent the show and continuing to try to reinvent the show is a challenge at this point, and listen, the show speaks to a lot of people, and young people love the show.”

Earlier this year, Pompeo revealed that she almost didn’t audition for the role of Meredith. As previously reported, the actress, whose name has appeared on several Forbes year-end lists, claims that her goal is to be on the big screen and not on television.

So when his agent first showed him the Shonda Rhimes-created script, he turned it down. Looking back, she says, “I was like, ‘I’m not going to be stuck on a medical show for five years.'”

The Screen Actors Guild Award winner finally came out after he realized that his acting career wasn’t progressing the way he wanted it to. Once he saw that he was stuck, he decided to audition, a move that changed the trajectory of his life.

Story-wise, Meredith spent most of her 19 years on screen struggling with ways to help her daughter Zola (played by Aniela Gumbs) deal with her consistent panic attacks.

So, when Zola finds a school for gifted children that she likes in Boston, her mother decides to accept the Boston job that Jackson Avery (played by Jesse Williams) offered her earlier. The deal means that the beloved doctor will join Jackson in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s.
