Pompeo was “very happy” not to be a part of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which surprised fans; however, he appreciated the production because it was “unusual for him.”

While expressing her love for her experience on the series, she admitted to Drew Barrymore on “The Drew Barrymore Show” that she had to “mix it up” a bit as she got older. The SAG Award winner said:

“I am 53 years old; my brain is like scrambled eggs. I have to do something new, or I’ll turn into, like, you know you can’t pick the New York Times crossword puzzle every day.”

He went on to state that the years he spent on the show, nineteen years, was longer than people keep their children in their homes. Pompeo elaborated, “People keep their kids in their homes until they’re 18 and then send them off to college. So this is kind of like going to college for me.

Talking about her plans after leaving “Grey’s Anatomy”, she has a lot going on and prioritizes “being more present” for her three children. Additionally, the Golden Globe Award nominee will be doing a limited series for Hulu next spring, which he described as “really cool, like a crazy true story.”

In the midst of announcing her exit from the ABC show, The Blast reported that Pompeo took to Instagram to write a touching tribute attached to a photo of her wearing a yellow turtleneck and staring intently into the camera. The message reads in part:

“I am forever grateful and humbled by the love and support you all have shown me, Meredith GRAY, and the show for 19 seasons.”

Pompeo praised those who stayed with him for nearly two decades as he emphasized that “none of it” would have been possible without “the best fans in the world.” He further called them “riders” and acknowledged that they all made the experience “so much fun and ICONIC!!” Afterwards, he expressed his love and gratitude to his supporters, leading him to conclude:

“It’s not your first time on a rollercoaster… you know the show must go on, and I’ll definitely be back to visit. With much love and gratitude, XoE.”

Less than fifteen hours after the post went live, it had nearly two million likes and over 31k comments filled with love and heartfelt goodbyes. One fan believes the show won’t be the same without Meredith Gray but still expressed excitement for Pompeo’s new project and hopes to see her again.

Another follower was “devastated” to hear the news as they noted that “Grey’s Anatomy” has become a big part of who they are since its first episode aired.

Those same heartbroken fans praised Meredith for her “toughness, tenacity, and determination combined with her compassion and maternal nature” that influenced their personalities and characters.

Calamity Jane Founder Has Only Watched a Few Episodes of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Although Pompeo gained incredible fame with her role as Meredith in “Grey’s Anatomy”, she almost turned down the show because she wanted to be on the big screen, not glued to television. The Blast reports that he ended up taking the role when his career wasn’t moving forward, and he was having trouble paying his bills.

Being on TV had some perks, including having time to be with her kids, so she decided to focus on making money, not pursuing “creative acting roles.” Meanwhile, while the “Law & Order” star was on vacation, he rarely watched “Grey’s Anatomy” and only saw a handful of its 18 seasons and 392 episodes.

Still, he makes sure to watch episodes he directed and episodes from earlier seasons to “keep the spirit of the early days.” Pompeo believes it’s “really hard work,” trying to “keep that kind of DNA,” but it gives the star a goal to strive for.
