Fierce fighting raged overnight and into Sunday across Gaza, including in the devastated north, as Israel continued its offensive after the US blocked the latest international call for a ceasefire and rained more ammunition on its close ally.
Israel has faced growing international outrage and calls for a permanent ceasefire after the killing of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Nearly 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced inside the besieged territory, where UN agencies say there is no safe place to flee.
The United States has lent significant support to the attack again in recent days, by vetoing a United Nations Security Council effort to end the fighting that has broad international support, and by continuing an emergency sale of more than $100 million worth of tank ammunition to Israel .

Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, told Israel’s Channel 12 TV late Saturday that the US has not set a deadline for Israel to achieve its goal of destroying Hamas and returning all hostages.
