Violence rages through Gaza after US blocks latest push for ceasefire

Fierce fighting raged overnight and into Sunday across Gaza, including in the devastated north, as Israel continued its offensive after the US blocked the latest international call for a ceasefire and rained more ammunition on its close ally.

Israel has faced growing international outrage and calls for a permanent ceasefire after the killing of thousands of Palestinian civilians. Nearly 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced inside the besieged territory, where UN agencies say there is no safe place to flee.

The United States has lent significant support to the attack again in recent days, by vetoing a United Nations Security Council effort to end the fighting that has broad international support, and by continuing an emergency sale of more than $100 million worth of tank ammunition to Israel .

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked US President Joe Biden for “vital ammunition for the continuation of the war,” and for supporting Israel in the Security Council.

The US has pledged unwavering support for Israel’s goal of destroying Hamas’ military and governing capabilities, and returning all hostages captured in the October 7 attack that sparked the war.

Hamas and other Palestinian terrorists swept into southern Israel that day, killing about 1,200 people and capturing about 240, more than 100 of whom were released during a week-long truce late last month.

In response to the attack, Israel launched an air and ground war that has killed thousands of Palestinians, mostly civilians, and forced some 1.9 million people to flee their homes.

With little aid allowed in, and deliveries impossible in most regions, Palestinians face shortages of food, water and other basic goods.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who used rare powers last week to call for a ceasefire, said “we face a grave risk of the collapse of the humanitarian system.”

“The situation is deteriorating into a catastrophe with irreversible implications for the Palestinian people as a whole and for peace and security in the region,” he said at a forum in Qatar.

Israel’s national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, told Israel’s Channel 12 TV late Saturday that the US has not set a deadline for Israel to achieve its goal of destroying Hamas and returning all hostages.

“The assessment that this cannot be measured in a few weeks is correct, and I am not sure that it can be measured in a few months,” he said.

FIGHTING AND CAPTURES IN THE NORTH

Palestinians continue to resist, even in the devastated neighborhoods of Northern Gaza. AP

Israeli forces continue to face heavy resistance, even in northern Gaza, where entire neighborhoods have been leveled by airstrikes and where ground forces have been operating for more than six weeks.

Israel’s Channel 13 TV aired footage showing dozens of detainees stripped to their underwear with their hands in the air.

Several people held assault rifles above their heads, and one man could be seen slowly walking forward and placing the gun on the ground before returning to the group.

Other videos in recent days have shown groups of unarmed men being held in similar conditions, naked, bound and blindfolded.

Detainees from a separate group released Saturday told The Associated Press they had been beaten and denied food and water.

Israel has not commented on the latest video or alleged persecution, but government spokesman Eylon Levy said an “increasing number” of Hamas fighters had surrendered and given up their weapons, describing it as a sign of a “collapse” of morale.

Residents say there is still heavy fighting in the Shijaiyah neighborhood and the Jabaliya refugee camp, a dense urban area that houses Palestinian families who fled or were driven out of what is now Israel during the 1948 war around its creation.

“They attack anything that moves,” said Hamza Abu Fatouh, a resident of Shijaiyah. He said the dead and wounded were left on the road because ambulances could no longer reach the area, where Israeli snipers and tanks had positioned themselves among abandoned buildings.

“The resistance is also fighting back,” he added, saying gun battles had broken out late Saturday.

Israel ordered the evacuation of the northern third of the territory, including Gaza City, at the beginning of the war, but tens of thousands of people have remained there, fearing that the south will not be safer or that they will not be allowed to return to their places. home.

Heavy fighting also took place in and around the southern city of Khan Younis.

WAITING FOR FOOD

As a result of Israeli attacks, Palestinians have to wait for hours to get basic necessities. AP

In central Gaza, hundreds of Palestinians wait for flour outside a UN distribution center. Food prices have soared as large parts of the region face severe shortages. Abdulsalam al-Majdalawi said he came every day for almost two weeks, hoping to get food for his family of seven.

“Every day, we spend five or six hours here and return home (empty-handed),” he said. “Alhamdulillah, today they pulled our name.”

With the war in its third month, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has surpassed 17,700, the majority women and children, according to the Ministry of Health in the Hamas-controlled territory. The Ministry does not differentiate between the deaths of civilians and combatants.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for the civilian deaths, saying the terrorists put civilians in danger by fighting in densely populated residential areas.

The army said 97 Israeli soldiers had died in the ground attack.

Palestinian terrorists also continue to fire rockets into Israel.

Netanyahu’s office said Sunday that Hamas still had 117 hostages, as well as the bodies of 20 people killed in captivity or during the October 7 attack.

The terrorists hope to exchange them for Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Israel said it had given detailed instructions for civilians to evacuate to safer areas, even as it continued to attack what it said were terrorist targets in all parts of the region. Thousands have fled to the southern city of Rafah and other areas along the border with Egypt in recent days – one of the last areas where aid agencies have been able to deliver food and water.

The war has raised tensions across the region, with Lebanese Hezbollah trading with Israel along the border and other Iran-backed terrorist groups targeting the US in Syria and Iraq.

France said one of its warships in the Red Sea shot down two drones that had approached it from Yemen, where Iran-backed Houthi rebels have vowed to cut off Israeli shipments through a key waterway.

Hanegbi said Israel had called on its Western allies to deal with the threat and would give them “some time” to organize a response. But he said if the threat persists, “we will act to remove these restrictions.”
