Record-setting 260,000 migrants crossed southern border in September: report

A record number of migrants crossed the southern border into the United States in September, with more than 260,000 encounters reported by Customs and Border Protection in the past 30 days, according to reports.

That amazing figure – which is about the population of St. Petersburg, Florida – is the highest monthly total ever reported by border officials as the country grapples with the immigration crisis, CBP sources told Fox News.

That total includes both CBP meetings between ports of entry and Office of Field Operations (OFO) meetings at ports, Fox reported.

The previous record was set last December, when CBP officials reported 252,320 immigrant encounters.

The intersection showed a downward trend throughout the new year but has surged in recent months. Just last week, CBP announced there were at least 230,000 immigrant encounters in August.

Agency officials told Fox they experience high crossings every day. Earlier this month, about 9,100 migrants crossed from Mexico into Arizona alone in one day.

In El Paso, Texas, more than 2,000 immigrants enter the US every day, forcing the Democratic-run border city to charter as many buses as it can to cities across the country.

The border patrol, overwhelmed and under-resourced to deal with the flooding, was forced to release migrants onto the streets in some cases.

CBP officials told Fox that the latest surge comes at a critical time with lawmakers distracted in Washington DC by a thwarted government shutdown, which would stop pay for border agents, who are essential federal workers.

A last-minute bipartisan deal was approved by the House and Senate on Saturday night, keeping the government running until November 17.
