Two passengers blew up about an hour after takeoff on a Hawaii-bound flight, forcing travelers and other crew members to break up the mid-air brawl, a distressing video shows.
Chaos occurred on Southwest Airlines Flight 1288 from Oakland to Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai on Monday, airline officials told Hawaii News Now.
“I heard screams, shouts and punches. I turned around and saw one man bleeding and then another being separated,” passenger Jim Wieder told the outlet.
In the video of the exchange, a man, dressed in a gray hoodie and baseball cap, is seen getting closer to another man, wearing a gray pullover, before the confrontation turns ugly.
The man in the baseball cap was slapped on the arm by the man in the scarf as he approached him from the aisle, while the Southwest Airlines crew and fellow passengers had already physically separated them.
The man in the baseball cap then unleashed a series of punches, landing about seven in the face of other passengers before fellow travelers pulled him away.
Despite being restrained, she continued to scream as he held her down, trying desperately to calm her down.
The man was seen jumping at other passengers and began throwing punches, landing at least seven.
“Honestly, I was a little nervous because we were at 35,000 feet and you have two guys swinging at each other, which makes no sense at all,” Wieder said.
A fight broke out between two male passengers about an hour into the flight, another witness shared.
It is unclear what sparked the fight between the two passengers.
The plane, however, did not turn around and continued to fly to Kauai, a witness told the outlet.
A Southwest Airlines flight attendant was seen telling the man to back off after he landed a series of punches on another passenger.
“We commend our Crew and Customers for their professionalism in handling this situation,” a Southwest official said in a statement to Hawaii News Now.
“The flight landed safely at its scheduled destination, and local authorities located the flight upon arrival.”
The two men were arrested after the flight landed.
It is not known if any charges have been laid against either man.

The mid-air brawl is just the latest shocking altercation to take place in the sky.
Just two weeks ago, a JetBlue passenger had to be restrained by four fellow travelers after being rude to the cabin crew.
The flight took off from London Gatwick Airport and was en route to New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport when the aggressive man was captured on video struggling with four other men who tried to restrain him in the darkened cabin aisle.
The passenger was allegedly drunk when he became unruly in the air.
Similarly, an American Airlines flight last month had to be diverted after a passenger allegedly punched a flight attendant who asked him to stop kicking a fellow passenger’s seat.
A fellow passenger on the flight said the man spat at people, adding that she saw him banging his head against the window, and he worried the crew enough that the pilot declared a level two threat at about 1:50 p.m. and diverted to Rick International Airport. Amarillo’s husband.
