Elliot Page shares one of the pivotal interactions that helped him embrace his new life as a transgender man.
The Hollywood sensation, formerly known as Ellen, became an icon of the LGBTQ+ community after announcing her identity as a man in 2020. Since coming out, the entertainer has been actively raising awareness about transgender people using her inspirational story.
Come June 6, the world will be able to read about the Canadian heartthrob’s emotional journey of transition in his highly anticipated memoir, “Pageboy.” Ahead of the book’s publication, the TV personality dropped a key quote from his autobiography.
Elliot’s Page Describes a Special Moment That Helped Him Overcome Shyness
An exclusive sneak peek of the first chapter in the voice actor’s memoir “Ark: The Animated Series” was shared with PEOPLE recently. The story details the Oscar nominee’s love for a woman named Paula, who turns the performer’s first experience at a gay bar into a life-changing moment.

Like a poet reminiscing about a long-lost lover, the 36-year-old’s story begins with a wistful song: “I met Paula when I was twenty. Sitting on our friend’s couch, eating raw almonds with her knees to her chest, she introduced herself, ‘I’m Paula.’”
“His voice radiated warmth, kindness. His eyes didn’t sparkle but they found you. I could feel him looking,” the story continued. “We went to Reflection. It was my first time to a gay bar, and it would be my last. me for a long time. I’m a pathetic temptress.”
At the time, the Halifax native was a Hollywood sensation on the rise, but confidently playing her part on TV didn’t automatically make Page fluent with words. The “Juno” star admitted that he flirts when he doesn’t mean to and not when he wants to.
Despite his poor pick-up line, the Gotham Award winner noted that his time at the gay bar was an exciting new experience. As someone who previously suffered from queer shyness, being in such an environment and enjoying it was magical.
“Shame has been drilled into my bones since I was my smallest self, and I fought to rid my body of that old toxic and erosive marrow,” explained the Canadian sensation. “But there was joy in the room; it lifts me up, forces a reaction in the jaw, an uncontrollable, steady smile.”
“Dancing, sweat wets the back, to the chest. I watched Paula’s hair twist and bounce as she moved effortlessly, chaotic yet controlled, sensual and strong. Will I catch him looking at me, or will it be the other way around? We want to be caught—a deer in the headlights. Shocked, but not broken,” added the writer.
The air is thick with their chemistry, an irresistible attraction that provides Page with the confidence he needs to release the “oppression at the door.” Surrendering to the emotions that built up in his heart, the 36-year-old man asked for permission to kiss Paula.

“And then I did it. In a weird bar. In front of everyone around us. I understood more and more what all the poetry was about, what the fuss was about,” the TV personality revealed, noting that “antagonistic and brutal voice” that flooded his head as he felt the desire finally quiet.
While gushing about the kiss, the “Hard Candy” actress declared that the moment revealed the path that led her from Ellen to Elliot. “Here I am on the precipice. I’m getting closer to my desires, my dreams, me, without the unbearable burden of self-loathing I’ve been carrying,” the trans icon wrote.
EDA Award Winner Tears Up When Unboxing First Copy of Autobiography
Days before the “Pageboy” trailer dropped, the “Tallulah” actor got emotional while holding the first copy of his memoir in a heartwarming unboxing video. While promoting her upcoming book on Instagram, the 36-year-old shared her reaction to the autobiography’s physical body.
The clip, filmed inside Page’s living room, captures the Gemini Award recipient sitting on a couch as she prepares to open a large box at her feet. “Well, I have the first box of ‘Pageboy,’ the physical book. Here we go,” said the Canadian heartthrob as he opened the shipment to reveal his books.

Holding back tears, the “Inception” star’s voice filled with emotion when she saw the first copy of her memoir. “Wow,” she exclaimed, turning the pages gently and touching them as if to convince herself that the book was not an illusion.
“Wow, right,” the trance icon admitted with a nervous laugh, still enthralled by the memoir in her hand. Finally satisfied, the performer faced the camera with unshed tears and offered a parting statement: “Can’t wait for you to read it.
