Billionaire Elon Musk continues to receive criticism from Twitter users.
First, it’s the $8 monthly blue Twitter checkmark verification fee. Then it suspended accounts that mocked and impersonated her – including one belonging to comedian Kathy Griffin.
On Tuesday, Election Day, the Tesla CEO received backlash for revealing how he planned to vote, with some labeling him “hypocritical” after Musk previously declared that Twitter should be politically neutral.
Elon Musk Said Twitter Should Be Politically Neutral… Then Changed Its Tune On Election Day
To free-thinking voters:
Joint power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, so I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, since the Presidency is Democratic.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 7, 2022
On Monday, Musk tweeted“To free-thinking voters: Joint power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, so I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, since the Presidency is Democratic.”
He then added, “Hard-line Democrats or Republicans never vote for the other party, so independent voters are the ones who really decide who’s in charge!”
In order for Twitter to gain public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means disappointing the far right and the far left equally
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 27, 2022
However, many are quick to point out a tweets from April which read, “For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means disappointing the far right and the far left equally.”

A March For Our Lives founder David Hogg clapped back at Musk, giving both definitions for “neutral” and “hypocrite” in response to Musk’s tweet.
Hi @elonmuskin this tweet in April, you said Twitter should be politically neutral https://t.co/XHo9gPR2b5
How do you, as the head of Twitter, justify recommending which party people should vote for after you support political neutrality for the platform?
— Kanishka Raj Singh (@Kanishka183) November 7, 2022
Journalist Kanishka Raj Singh also took issue with Musk’s stance, asking, “How do you, as the head of Twitter, justify recommending which party people should vote for after you support political neutrality for the platform?”

Musk Claims He Is ‘Open’ To The Idea Of Voting Democrat Again In The Future
And I’m open to the idea of voting Democrat again in the future
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 7, 2022
Musk tried to defend himself from a political backlash, tweeting, “To be clear, my party’s historical affiliation is Independent, with an actual voting history entirely Democratic until this year. And I’m open to the idea of voting Democrat again in the future.”
So, with all that has happened with the Republican party (insurgency resulting in death, stripping women of bodily autonomy, voter suppression and election denial, promising to cut the safety net for seniors, etc.) NOW is when you CHOOSE to vote for them? Just curious.

However, Musk continues to receive criticism for siding with the Republican party, especially when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade earlier this year. One user asked, “So, with all that’s going on in the Republican party (rebellion resulting in death, stripping women of bodily autonomy, voter suppression and election denial, promises to cut the safety net for seniors, etc.) NOW is when you CHOOSE to vote for them? Just curious.”
Like most people in America, I agree with some Democratic and some Republican policies, but not all.
However, if the executive and legislative branches are controlled by *one* party, then we lose the balance of power.
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 7, 2022
While Musk didn’t reply to many users, he did reply to Complexly Media CEO Hank Green, who tweeted“This is an example of a tweet that affects your ability to prevent twitter from becoming an $8 per month subscription to Elon Musk’s fan club.”
Musk responded, “Like most people in America, I agree with some Democratic and some Republican policies, but not all. However, if the executive and legislative branches are controlled by *one* party, then we lose the balance of power.”
