Elon Musk was exposed to such a “demonic” explosion that he “barely remembers” the aftermath, according to his biographer.
Walter Isaacson, who followed the Tesla tycoon for three years for his bombshell biography to be released Tuesday, described the billionaire as having “multiple personalities.”
In an interview Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough asked Isaacson about different sides of the 52-year-old, saying his new book paints “two, three, four types of Elon.”
“You know, that’s a good question because he has so many personalities, almost like multiple personalities, and a little bit like his father, who he doesn’t talk to now — but his father is a Jekyll and Hyde and gets very dark at times,” the biographer replied. .
“And it happened to Elon, too. He would go from being really dizzy or in engineering mode, where he could be thinking about the valves of a raptor engine, and all of a sudden a cloud would come,” he continued.
“And the amazing thing is, after he goes dark and becomes demonic and really hard on people, he comes out of it. And then I’ll ask him, ‘What’s that about?’ and he barely remembers.”

Isaacson explained how he’s seen Musk change as he’s followed him over the past three years.
“When I started this book, when we first talked about it, this is the guy who brought us into the era of electric vehicles and the only person who could send an American astronaut into orbit from the US. I thought, ‘Hey, great technology story ,’” he told Scarborough.
“And then along the way, about a year after my report, he secretly bought Twitter and then went to Hawaii on a two- or three-night party and decided to take over,” the reporter said of Musk’s surprise announcement last year that he was buying the giant that social media.
“So it became more of a roller coaster ride then.”
Isaacson adds: “And the dark strands in him, as well as the competent strands, are intertwined.”
In an excerpt from his book, billionaire Bill Gates told how Musk was “very mean” to him after the Microsoft co-founder bought a short position in Tesla shares.

“As soon as he heard I had shorted the stock, he was very mean to me, but he’s very mean to a lot of people, so you can’t take it too personally,” Gates told the author.
Musk confirmed in April 2022 that he had declined a benevolent request from Gates over the stock shortage incident, detailing part of their text exchange.
In the text, the two billionaires appear set to meet somewhere before Musk asks Gates if he still has a “half billion dollar short position on Tesla.”
“Sorry to say I haven’t covered it yet,” Gates added in another text. “I would like to discuss the possibility of philanthropy.”
Musk responded that he couldn’t take Gates’ philanthropy on climate change “seriously” when “you have a huge short position on Tesla, the company is doing its best to solve climate change.”
Gates told Isaacson that he had apologized to Musk for the incident, but that the relationship had not improved.
Musk later posted a meme that appeared to mock Gates for his weight in the days following the revelation of the text exchange, but he soon announced that he had “moved on” from the topic.
The biography, titled “Elon Musk,” will hit shelves on September 12.
