Elon Musk Reportedly Plans MASSIVE Twitter Layoffs To Cut Costs

Billionaire Elon Musk officially acquired Twitter less than a week ago and many are already unhappy with the changes he plans to implement.

Tesla’s CEO called Twitter’s current blue verification system “bull—” in a tweet earlier this week and unveiled a new plan that lets anyone buy a blue checkmark for $8 a month, down from $20.

While many insist that the blue tick system is a way to verify the accounts of celebrities, governments and official brands, Musk seems convinced that charging for blue ticks is one of the best ways to create a revenue stream for the social media company.

Another way he plans to cut costs? By firing more than half of its workforce.

Although the SpaceX CEO fired Chief Executive Officer Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, and Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s head of legal policy, when he took over Twitter, it appears they were only the first to go.

On Wednesday, Insider reported that Elon Musk plans to cut about 3,700 people in the workforce, according to two sources familiar with the company and an internal memo.

Insiders previously reported that a type of review known as an employee stack position took place shortly before Musk officially took control of Twitter on October 28. They reported that the Vice President had compiled a list of employees in their department and made two lists: one list of employees they wanted to keep, and another list of employees they wanted to get rid of.

Insiders reported that the list was sent not only to Musk and the transition team, but also to Musk’s personal attorney, Alex Spiro.

It remains to be seen how much Twitter employees actually know about the upcoming layoffs, which are expected to take place on Friday, November 4. While there were reportedly 8,200 employees working at Twitter in June, the number dropped to 7,500 at the end of September , after hundreds of employees allegedly left after Musk made it clear that he planned to go ahead with his proposed $44 billion dollar deal.

If more than 3,700 people were indeed let go on Friday, that would mean Musk has laid off about half of Twitter’s remaining workforce.

While Elon Musk has received criticism for the way he handles his employees at his other companies, namely Tesla and SpaceX, he is now being accused of bringing the same behavior to Twitter. Insider reports that the 51-year-old entrepreneur needs employees to work “literally 24/7” to meet the demand for his products, with employees working 12-hour shifts around the world to keep progress moving.

A Twitter employee shared a photo of his boss apparently sleeping on the office floor in a sleeping bag just days after Musk took over the company. The Twitter employee in the photo has been identified as Esther Crawford, director of product management. The photo shows Crawford wearing an eye mask and curled up in a sleeping bag on a sleeping mat.

Even Jones, product manager at Twitter Spaces, tweeted the photo around 2 AM ET on Wednesday, adding, “When you need something from your boss at elon twitter.”

Crawford retweeted the photo, adding, “When your team is working around the clock to make deadlines sometimes you #SleepWhereYouWork.” Crawford then went on to defend the new company’s culture in a series of tweets advocating a “cultural shift.”

“Since some people are losing their minds, I’ll explain: doing hard things requires sacrifice (time, energy, etc),” he tweeted. “I have teammates all over the world who are trying to bring something new to life so it’s important for me to be there for them & make sure the team isn’t blocked.”

“I work with incredibly talented & ambitious people here at Twitter and this is no ordinary moment,” he continued. “We are less than 1 week into a massive business & culture shift. People give their all in all functions: product, design, English, legal, finance, marketing, etc.

“I love my family and I’m grateful they understand that there are times when I have to grind and push to deliver,” he added. “Building new things at the scale of Twitter is very difficult. I’m lucky to be doing this work with some of the best people in technology.”
