In her memoir, set to premiere on April 4, the “Pitch Perfect” star revealed her mother initially wanted to name her Rebel, but her father was against it. He called his mother’s choice “absurd” and decided to call actress Melanie.
“Mom didn’t stand up to Dad that day, nor for the next 17 years or so,” Wilson says in her book, noting that her father continued to bear painful scars before his death in 2013.
The 44-year-old stated in his interview with The Sunday Times that his father had hit him in the face three times and once tried to arrest him. On that occasion, he threatened young Wilson, saying:
“I will strangle you and kill you if you say one more thing, Melanie … I will strangle you.”

Wilson explained that this alleged incident with his father triggered his addiction to food, which then led to unhealthy habits that contributed to his weight gain. In his words:
“In moments when I’m worried or scared, I turn to food. I think because I saw my mother do it. Everyone has a coping mechanism – eating is mine.”
When Wilson was 17, her mother finally found the courage to break off her relationship with her father and kick him out of their lives. With her gone, the actress changed her name from Melanie to Rebel.
Regarding her weight, the 44-year-old woman admitted that it was more related to her emotional health than a physical problem. He said, “I didn’t deal with my emotions properly; I just stuff my face and hold on to them.”

However, she didn’t use the viral Hollywood cheating hack to lose weight but to maintain her new shape. “Someone like me probably has an insatiable appetite for sweets, so I thought the drugs could be good,” explains Wilson.
Despite Ozempic’s benefits, the 44-year-old insists he no longer uses the diabetes drug. She noted that she had found a weight she was comfortable with, which she described as “still curvaceous and solid.”
“I feel strongly that young women shouldn’t be trying to obsess over looking like a Victoria’s Secret model — they should be looking like themselves,” Wilson said. “I know that my relationship with food is complicated.”
Wilson Warns About His Memoirs
Last December, the “Isn’t It Romantic” star promoted her upcoming memoir in a candid Instagram Story video. He shared behind-the-scenes moments of the biography’s development and filmed himself signing copies of the book.
The literary endeavor promises to explore Wilson’s unconventional Hollywood journey and tackle personal topics such as fertility, weight, sexuality and more.
In the video, the actress teased fans about her memoir and stated that it will showcase the unseen parts of her life.
“You, I mean, I can’t wait for you to read this. You will see a new side of me. Lots of funny stuff and serious stuff,” he said, adding:
“And hopefully you’ll all love the book as much as I loved writing it — even if it’s heartbreaking and emotional at times.”
Rebel Wilson Says The Writing Process Is Challenging
Wilson previously discussed the development of his book in an interview, where he admitted that the writing process was challenging.
The early chapters had fallen below his expectations, prompting him to search for his authentic writing style. On how he overcame this obstacle, the 44-year-old said:
“So what I started doing was I just sat there by myself as if I was just telling a story to a friend. I just found my writing style — it’s like I’m sitting across from my friend, telling you all the deepest secrets of my life, which is kind of scary.”
Wilson noted that the whole process was intimate because he kept the innermost parts of himself on paper. However, he couldn’t be happier to embark on a literary adventure.
“I have been writing the book for the past 18 months because when I write, I have to be completely alone and isolated,” he said. “It was a secret thing that I did on my own for 18 months. It’s very exciting now that it’s done.”
