Ex-Wisconsin university chancellor says he’s shocked board that axed him over adult videos wasn’t ‘a little more understanding’

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow, who was upset about the adult video he made with his wife, said he was surprised that board members weren’t “a little more understanding” — but insisted he had no regrets about filming the movie. content.

Gow, 63, – who was fired from his long-term position by the Board of Regents on Wednesday – argued that he should not be given a pink slip because his videos should be protected by the First Amendment.

“I didn’t expect that we would end up where we are now,” Gow told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel afterward.

“I think the board, given their strong support for free speech will be a little understanding. But obviously that didn’t happen.”

He said the board professes to favor free speech, even producing an annual free speech report, conducting student surveys and hosting free speech events across the state — including one earlier this month featuring both Democratic and Republican lawmakers that Gow attended.

With all these free-speech events, Gow said he thinks no one on the board will have a problem with its adult content.

“I would say that whatever I do or my wife and I do, we do as citizens of the United States, who have the First Amendment freedom in the Constitution, to create and publish books and videos that explore adult sexuality at will,” he said.

“I just think we have people on the board who say they are free to speak, but they really aren’t. And I don’t know how they’re going to explain this.”

Gow went on to call a public hearing made up of students, faculty and staff who could discuss what constitutes appropriate free speech, and questioned how the board was aware of his video and book.

He said no university property or funds were used in their creation and nothing was said about the university.

“So other people have to make the association,” he said. “And then someone has to say that’s problematic.”

Gow — La Crosse’s second-longest-serving chancellor — appears in various online porn videos with his wife, Carmen Wilson, using “Happy Sexy Couple” as their public account name.

The films, which sometimes feature famous porn stars, appear on websites such as OnlyFans as well as Pornhub, with some getting more than 200,000 views, according to the Journal Sentinel.

All videos have been posted for the past two months.

Gow and Wilson – who met after he chaired the search committee that selected him to lead the university – also wrote two books together detailing their non-traditional relationships in the porn industry, although they were written under pseudonyms.

They published “Monogamy with Benefits: How Porn Enriches Our Relationships” in 2015, followed by “Married with Benefits: Our Real-Life Adult Industry Adventure” in 2018.

In one of the books, the couple stated that they were “pretty sure there would be a scandal if our peers found out about what we’ve done.”

UW system president of regents Karen Walsh has accused the chancellor of showing “disregard for the role entrusted to him.”

“We are concerned, and disgusted, by his actions, which are completely and undeniably inconsistent with his role as chancellor,” Walsh added.

University of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman also said in a statement: “In recent days, we learned of specific behavior by Dr. Gow which has caused the university to suffer significant reputational damage. His actions are disgusting.”

A salaried faculty member who has served as chancellor since 2007, Gow will be placed on paid administrative leave when he transitions to his faculty role.

However, Rothman said he filed a complaint Wednesday afternoon with interim Chancellor Betsy Morgan asking that Gow’s status as a tenured faculty member be reviewed.

An outside law firm has been hired “to conduct a full investigation into the matter,” Rothman said.

When asked by the Journal Sentinel whether Gow — who had announced in August his plans to retire at the end of the 2023-24 academic year and return to the faculty as a communications professor — would continue to make videos, he brushed the question aside.
