‘Exceptional levels’ of rats and mice invade trenches on Ukraine’s front lines

Troops on both sides of the Ukraine conflict are experiencing “unusual levels” of rat and mouse infestation on the front lines, leading to a drop in morale and even disease, according to a British intelligence briefing released Saturday.

Rat attacks are crushing morale, and there are unconfirmed reports that Russian soldiers are suffering from an infectious disease linked to an explosion in rat populations in trenches in eastern Ukraine, the UK Ministry of Defense said.

“This year’s mild autumn, together with sufficient food from fields left behind by the fighting, is likely to contribute to an increase in rat populations,” said a Ministry of Defense briefing posted on X. “As the weather turns colder, the animals are likely to seek shelter in vehicles and defensive positions. Rats will add pressure to the morale of front-line fighters.”

The rats are also a threat to military equipment, the briefing said.

“In addition, they pose a risk to military equipment by gnawing on cables – as was recorded in the same area during the Second World War,” the post continued.
