The family became famous for their TLC series “19 Kids and Counting,” a show that followed the Christian tribe’s devout lifestyle. Under the tutelage of parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, their eldest son was raised to adhere to fair values.
One of the conservative traditions enforced by the head of the family is not allowing their daughters to wear pants. However, at a recent gathering, the parent broke her dress code with her older daughter.

In a recent Instagram update, Jessa Seewald (née Duggar) revealed that times have changed in her family. The reality TV star shared a group photo of herself with her mother and eight sisters at a reunion gathering.
For a moment, the older Duggars broke their modest dress code, swapping their regular skirts and dresses for pants. The surprising part, however, is that the parents, who previously made sure their children followed strict rules, wore black leggings to family events.
However, it seems the 56-year-old can’t completely break years of tradition as a closer inspection reveals a second outfit. Michelle paired the figure-hugging material with a knee-length black skirt and completed her sporty look with a chambray top.
Following their mom’s new style, daughters Jana, Jill, Jessa, Jinger and Joy-Anna happily ditched their skirts and proudly rocked pants ranging from jeans to sweatpants. On the other hand, the younger Duggar girls are sticking to their family rules.
Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn-Grace and Josie, dressed conservatively in clan tradition and wore dresses and loose skirts. Despite their different dress codes, everyone shared bright smiles for the camera because they hadn’t seen each other in a long time.
“As everyone gets older, life gets busier— meaning it’s always extra special when we manage to get all 9 of us siblings + mom back together in the same place at the same time,” Jessa captioned the post. “Last week was gold.”
Following her social media update, fans flooded the comments section with their reactions to the picture. “Michelle in pants ????” shouted one fan. “Good luck to you all.”
Another added: “Wow! Look at all the pants. Times have changed,” A third read, “All the older girls wear pants.” Another expressed shock at seeing her parents ditch her baggy clothes for figure-hugging clothes, “Does Michelle wear pants? Did I miss something?” Some wonder.
“Notice all the grown girls wearing pants because they know there’s nothing wrong with them,” said one fan. “But young girls still have to wear skirts.” Another echoed the same sentiment, subtly criticizing Michelle’s choice.
“So the stay-at-home girls still wear skirts, but now mom wears tights… but the little one can’t,” the individual observed, while another teased: “Michelle’s in PANTS!! Jim-Bob is shaking.”
To those who thought that the parents were completely ignoring the rules, some fans explained that the 56-year-old woman matched her leggings with a skirt. “I thought Michelle was wearing leggings and almost lost them,” one eagle-eyed follower confessed. “I love all the panties in the photo.”
One fact finder wrote, “Sorry, you guys. Those are not pants. It is a sports skirt with fitted leggings underneath. Look again!” A third shared the same sentiment, writing: “Look closer; she wears leggings with a skirt.”
Jinger Duggar Talks About Her Decision To Wear Pants Despite Family Restrictions
Michelle appears to be following in the footsteps of her daughter Jessa who has openly spoken about breaking away from her family’s strict dress code. In January, the 29-year-old opened up about her decision to start wearing pants as an adult.
The mother of two explained that because of her family’s beliefs, she believed a modest dress code was the only way to gain God’s approval. “I thought I had to just wear skirts and dresses to please God,” the Arkansas native said.
The author of “Becoming Free Indeed” explains that he follows these rules for fear of incurring God’s wrath. In his words: “If I step outside of what I think is expected of me, I think God will be very displeased with me, and it could bring harm to myself.”
The conservative tradition stems from his parents’ membership in the Institute of Basic Life Principles. Disgraced minister Bill Gothard founded the organization in 1961, where women are taught to submit to their husbands and shun modern culture like dating.
