Father, daughter survive 107-degree heat while lost hiking in Texas national park

What was supposed to be an hour and a half hike turned into a 27-hour struggle for survival for Jeff Hahn and his daughter Harper.

In mid-June, the two explored Big Bend National Park on the southwest border of Texas, where the desert is arid and rocky, and temperatures reach at least 107 degrees.

Currently, Texas and several other Southern states are experiencing a heat wave.

Areas around the Lone Star State have temperatures like almost 120 degrees.

Getting back to their vehicle and finding a way to escape the heat became a high priority. So he and Harper decide to have Harper, an endurance athlete, move forward and Jeff will try to stay with him.

For them to find safety, however, the two eventually had to separate.

During this time, Jeff said he experienced some miracles.

One of them involved him spotting what turned out to be an old miner’s shack.

Not only did the hut provide him with protection from the extreme heat, but it also contained two sealed water bottles from hikers who had visited the building before.

The second miracle also gave Jeff access to water.

As day turned to night, he said he tripped over a rock and fell to the ground, breaking his wrist in the process. Despite his injury, his other arm fell into a pool of rainwater in the rock basin, which Jeff would have missed had he remained standing.

After 27 hours in blistering 107 degree heat, the two were finally safe.

“It was a horrible day, but it had a happy ending,” Jeff said.

The hottest months in Big Bend National Park are June, July and August with average high temperatures in the mid- to mid-90s, according to the NPS.

However, temperatures can vary greatly depending on elevation, the NPS says.

The desert floor is often over 100 degrees Fahrenheit while the Chisos Mountains can be 10-20 degrees cooler.
