Dr. Anthony Fauci admitted to lawmakers on Tuesday that guidelines for maintaining a six-foot distance — ostensibly to limit the spread of COVID-19 — are “kind of emerging” without scientific input.
Fauci, 83, revealed to the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic that the “six feet away” recommendation championed by him and other US public health officials “may not be based on scientific data,” according to Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), who also a doctor.
Schools across the country remained closed into the second year of the outbreak due to social distancing guidelines, which have been disputed by both research studies and other health officials.
“I don’t think that six feet is very sensitive in the context of mitigation,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health who served as President Biden’s COVID response coordinator for 15 months, told the New York Times in March 2021. “I hope the CDC will come out and say this is not a major issue.”

Asked about a study at a Massachusetts school that found a distance of just three feet between students resulted in “similar” rates of COVID cases, Fauci said the same month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was “very carefully” reviewing the data and “most likely” their updates .

“After two days of testimony and 14 hours of questioning, many things became clear. During his interview today, Dr. Fauci claims that the policies and mandates he promotes may unfortunately increase vaccine skepticism for years to come,” Wenstrup said.
“It is clear that dissent is often not considered or completely suppressed. Should a future epidemic arise, America’s response must be guided by scientific facts and conclusive data.”
Wenstrup also said committee members “remain frustrated by Dr. Fauci’s inability to recall important COVID-19 information for our investigation,” while “other people we’ve talked to remember the facts.”

Representative Michael Cloud (R-Texas), who sat on the panel, said Tuesday night that Fauci had shown “an extraordinary ability to either forget what happened or then find a way to avoid any responsibility for the influence that was there,” during the affair those two days.
“They wash their hands of any responsibility, saying, ‘Oh, that decision is made by the school district.’ But school districts know, if you don’t follow the guidance that comes out of the federal government, you open yourself up to legal action,” Cloud said of Fauci and other US pandemic response officials.
“He said he’s still not convinced there’s a learning loss — in his view, that’s still really open to discussion,” Cloud also told The Post. “I think [if] you ask any parent, they’ll tell you it’s a huge impact on their child’s development.”

The Republican staff member said the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) also “acknowledged that America’s vaccine mandate during the COVID-19 pandemic could increase vaccine skepticism in the future” but he advised US colleges “to impose vaccine mandates on their students” during pandemic.
In 2021, Fauci also said it was “proven that when you trouble people in their lives, they lose their ideology, and they get the vaccine.”
The COVID select subcommittee will hear further testimony from Fauci in a public hearing later this year.

Wenstrup told reporters that the full transcript of the interview with Fauci will be released once it has been reviewed by the majority and minority staff.
