Florida AG warns new residents, potential looters ahead of Hurricane Idalia landfall: ‘Law and order state’

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody issued a warning for new residents experiencing a hurricane for the first time, as well as any “bad actors” looking to profit from the storm, speaking to Fox News Digital Tuesday, a day before Hurricane Idalia made landfall in the area. Sunshine State.

“As you know, Florida leads the nation in net migration. Our population is increasing rapidly. So we have a lot of Floridians who have never experienced a storm like this,” Moody told Fox News Digital.

“So I’ve asked those like me – who I’m a fifth-generation Floridian, my family has been through many storms – to advise those who are new to Florida, please don’t take this lightly.”

“Please heed the warning,” Moody said. “I saw firsthand the impact of Ian and what it meant for those who were unprepared after the storm. So we don’t want that to happen to those new to Florida. We are very proud of our state and the success of our state. And we need to take care and help those who are just getting ready for what could happen in this storm.”

Moody also promised to prosecute anyone who wanted to loot abandoned properties after Hurricane Idalia made landfall.

“One thing we hear from people is, ‘We want to heed the warning, but we’re worried our property might be in danger if we’re not there,’ and that’s not going to be a concern in Florida,” Moody said. “We are a country of law and order. We will not take it lightly if people loot.”

“We want everyone to be in this together to think of each other to help support each other. We need to be aware that in times of emergency, in these challenging times, there are bad actors – from those who want to profit from essential commodities, to those who wait afterwards where property is abandoned, and not even. will be accepted,” said Moody.

“I’m very grateful to be able to work with a governor who is very strong on this and making sure people understand this is a state that will enforce the law and people should be aware.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced midday Tuesday that 49 of the state’s 67 counties are now under a state of emergency.

With Idalia forecast to make landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, DeSantis said more than 25,000 linemen were already in Florida as of Tuesday morning, with that expected to increase to more than 30,000 by the end of the day before the storm’s arrival.

The governor said local municipalities and utility companies will work together toward “speedy power restoration” with the major storm expected to bring a lot of debris and downed power lines to the Big Bend area.

DeSantis said at least 5,500 National Guardsmen have been deployed across the state.

Moody told Fox News Digital he spoke with sheriffs and emergency operations managers from around the state, encouraging them like last time with Hurricane Ian that anyone caught shoplifting in an evacuated area will not be released immediately on the street and that they see high bond.
