Illinois comptroller’s office attorney fired for antisemitic ‘gas chamber’ comments

A lawyer who served in the Illinois State Comptroller’s Office was fired for an antisemitic rant in which he told a Jew he wanted them to face the gas chamber and said, “Hitler should have exterminated you all.”

Sarah Chowdhury referred to Jews as “lice” and said “all Zionists should pay” in a private message with an Instagram account called Big Law Boiz.

Other messages, taken by Instagram users and then broadcast to X, including, “May someone send you anthrax or poison and you die a slow, horrible death.”

In the message, he also said, “I’d rather put you in the gas chamber” and “Hitler should have exterminated you all.”

The regulator’s office said in a statement Thursday that it was alerted to Chowdhury’s private message around 12:30 p.m., and that Controller Susana Mendoza called her about an hour and a half later.

Chowdhury was fired after he admitted to making at least some of the comments.

“Guard Mendoza has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech,” the guard’s office said said in a statement.

He was also removed from his post as president of the South Asian Law Society.

“The South Asian Bar Association of Chicago stands against hate, bigotry, and bias in any form,” the group said in a statement on Facebook.

Regarding Chowdhury’s comments, the bar association said: “We are deeply saddened and horrified by his words and the impact they have had on our friends, family and colleagues, and apologize for any harm they may have caused.

“His words are and will not reflect SABA Chicago,” it continued. “To be clear, SABA Chicago condemns such hateful rhetoric and is committed to supporting our community and all those affected by hate.”

“We will not tolerate such behavior by any of our members.”

The watchdog’s office said in a statement that Chowdhury was fired after admitting to making several comments.

Chowdhury said he was “deeply” sorry for the “inappropriate and reprehensible” comments, and apologized to the people he messaged and anyone who read his comments, in a speech to the Chicago Tribune.

He said he was frustrated by the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas and increasingly frustrated by the way the conflict was covered by the media and discussed on social media.

“I don’t know what hit me,” Chowdhury said. “I was in a state of panic.

“Antisemitism has no place anywhere.”

“No wonder Hitler wanted to get rid of them all,” Nozima Husainova wrote with a smiley face emoji in an Instagram Story, which has since been deleted along with the 25-year-old’s Instagram and other social media accounts.

Husainova had written the explosive comments in response to a post about a Gaza hospital bombing that was initially blamed on Israel but was later revealed to be the Islamic Jihad terrorist group after its operatives mistakenly fired a rocket.

An Atlanta cancer doctor has also been placed on leave after sharing a pro-Hamas Facebook post, in which he celebrated the terror group’s “glory” and wished for “no peace in the stolen land.”
