Florida youth football player shoots 2 teammates during fight at practice

A teenage football player shot and wounded two fellow athletes when an argument at a Florida Pop Warner practice escalated to gunfire Monday night, police said.

During the fight, a youth grabbed a gun from a car and fired a shot that hit two players around 8:20 p.m. at the sports complex 20 miles from Orlando, Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley said during a news conference.

The alleged shooter has been detained while authorities investigate. The gun was also found by the police.

One player was hit in the arm and another young player was shot in the upper torso by the same bullet, McKinley said, insisting the information he had was preliminary. Both are in stable condition.

The ages of the victim and the alleged shooter are unknown.

“The altercation started at the football field, took to the parking lot to a car and that’s where the shooting happened,” McKinley said during a press conference broadcast by Fox 35.

Adults prepared for the exercise quickly broke up the violence and the police arrived minutes later.

McKinley said he was surprised a minor had easy access to the gun.

“It’s unbelievable that young kids here to play football and have fun would get into an argument,” he said.

“A lot of adults around and in my day we would run and talk to our parents about it and let our parents handle it but in today’s society unfortunately our teenagers run, pick up guns and shoot guns. Unacceptable. We can do better than that as a society.”
