Four students among five shot at Baltimore’s Morgan State University during homecoming week

Four students were among five people shot at Morgan State University in Baltimore on Tuesday night during homecoming week, putting the school on lockdown for more than two hours.

No arrests have been made in a shooting at a black university campus in Maryland early Wednesday — and police have not disclosed whether they believe more than one suspect fired the shots.

Four men and one woman aged between 18 and 22, all students at the college, were shot when gunfire erupted around 9:25 p.m., police said.

There were no life-threatening injuries, police said.

Morgan State University police were patrolling the campus when they heard gunshots and called Baltimore police for backup.

Campus police located the victims and treated them at the scene before they were rushed to an area hospital.

Officers noticed several windows had been broken by bullets and feared the shooter may have been preparing for more violence.

Baltimore police later issued an alert around 10 p.m. warning of an active shooter situation near campus in the 1700 block of Argonne Drive and urging residents to take shelter there.

By 11:45 p.m., police said there was no longer an active shooter threat, and just after 12:30 a.m., Morgan State University announced the shelter-in-place order had been lifted and shuttle service had resumed.

A Baltimore councilman said there may have been more than one shooter.

“There are believed to be three shooters firing into the crowd,” City Councilman Ryan Dorsey said on X, previously on Twitter.

But police officials could not confirm the number of shooters early Wednesday.

Morgan State University has asked the public to stay away from the area around Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center. It also asked concerned parents to avoid the campus area and instead report to a nearby parking lot during the closure.

His students had been celebrating homecoming week ahead of a big varsity game scheduled for Saturday when the bullets flew.

Just a few hours earlier, the college hosted a coronation event to crown Mr. and Ms. Morgan State.

University president David Wilson said the event at the Murphy Fine Arts Center was near capacity as parents from across the country joined students on campus.

“This was an incredibly beautiful event this evening and our students at the end of it made their way to the Student Center to cheer and rejoice when this unfortunate situation erupted on campus,” Wilson said at a news conference early Wednesday.

The traumatic shooting overshadowed the week’s homecoming celebration and classes were canceled Wednesday, with around-the-clock counseling available for students.

A student told local CBS affiliate station WJZ that he mistook the gunshots for fireworks due to the festivities going on this week.

The brother of another student said his brother was locked in a bathroom on campus following the shooting.

The station broadcast images of a shattered seventh-floor window with a bullet hole clearly through it in a residence hall occupied mostly by freshmen. It was unclear whether the gunman fired from the dorm room through a window or into the room from outside, WJZ reported.

Baltimore police, SWAT officers and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) could be seen entering the building and conducting a sweep of rooms with broken windows, according to the news station.

Police officials later said the shooting happened outside.

The Baltimore ATF office confirmed that it was assisting local police at the scene.

The shooting was not the first to happen on campus around homecoming.

A year ago, in October 2022, a student was shot during an unsanctioned homecoming party outside the college’s student center, and two years ago, in October 2021, a different student was shot in a fight on campus in the middle of the celebration, Baltimore reported Banners. .

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, however, said the issue of gun violence is not specific to universities or cities but is a nationwide epidemic that must be addressed at the federal level.

“This morning, the entire city of Baltimore feels pain for the Morgan community, for these victims and their families and for our city as a whole,” he said at an early morning press conference.

“This unfortunate and unacceptable tragedy joins, as we know, a long line of colleges and schools across this country that have seen incidents like this … We need action.”
