Frightening moment Argentina town’s only bridge is swept away by mud wave captured on video

Floodwaters in northern Argentina caused huge waves of mud to violently wash away bridges as locals ran in panic.

Shocking video recorded in the province of Catamarca shows a group of residents watching the swollen Rincon River on Monday following days of heavy rain in the region.

The river was then hit by a sudden wave of water, mud and rocks, which collided with the only bridge leading to the outskirts of Rincon.

Instead of collapsing under the weight of the powerful waves, the bridge was lifted straight off the road and carried into the raging river.

Witnesses could do nothing but scream in horror as the span quickly disappeared into the flood — and those standing too close to the edge were forced to run as the muddy water began to rush up the bank and flood the footpath.

The destroyed bridge was the only one of its kind in Rincon, isolating the town of less than 600 people from neighboring villages, South American news station teleSur reported.

Ricardo Lescano, spokesman for the neighboring city of Saujil, stated that the bridge was inaugurated a little more than a month ago, according to the Buenos Aires newspaper Pagina 12.

Government officials said that the Rincon bridge was only one of two lost in recent floods in the province.

“Due to heavy rain for the past few hours, there has been a strong surge in the Rincon and Sijan rivers,” said the Catamarca government in a statement.

No casualties have yet been reported in the incident.

The Civil Defense Force has been mobilized to help residents in Rincon and others affected by flooding in the Catamarca region.
