California’s Gavin Newsom Gavin Newsom threw cold water on efforts to bar former President Trump from the California ballot, warning it was undemocratic.
“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our freedoms as well as to our democracy,” Newsom said in a statement. “But in California, we beat candidates at the polls. Everything is political interference.”
Trump was disqualified from participating in Colorado’s Republican primary earlier this week after the state Supreme Court’s decision.
The order has been stayed pending a final decision from the Supreme Court.
A bunch of other states are now exploring the idea of barring Trump from their ballots, including New York.
In California, efforts to keep Trump off the ballot are heating up after the state’s Democratic Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis asked Sacramento’s secretary of state to copy Colorado’s decision.

“I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 California presidential primary,” Kounalakis wrote to Secretary of State Shirley Weber.
“This decision is about respecting the rule of law in our country and protecting the pillars of our democracy,” he added speaking of the Colorado decision.
Newsom issued a statement rejecting the idea of removing Trump from the California ballot on Friday.
