Antetokounmpo, 28, and Minhaj, 37, share their cultural backgrounds while shooting hoops in a game they call, “Adetokunbo,” a HORSE game known for its twists. Minhaj suggested swapping the word “HORSE” for Antetokounmpo’s lesser-known Nigerian name, Adetokunbo, while the two spoke candidly about their names.

“Why are we going with your Nigerian name?” Minhaj asked as the Milwaukee Bucks star shot. “It means everything to me. I grew up in Greece and my parents are Nigerian. That’s me. I have to represent,” Antetkounmpo said.

Minhaj then added that he has friends who have changed their ethnic names. “And I went through it in comedy. At any point do you feel I should change my name?” he asked Antetokounmpo, who replied, “I’m not going to change my name. I want to be myself – Giannis Ugo Sina Adetokunbo.”

The two continue their version of the HORSE game and Minhaj keeps adding letters to the board as he misses a shot. “I am proud of my name. What makes you proud?” the NBA star asked Minhaj. “Immigrants, when you grow up, you feel this is a weakness. It is my greatest strength,” he said. “The newcomer is beautiful. We are tough, we are smart, our language is beautiful. So there’s this feeling of collectivism because there’s no one like us.”

Antetokounmpo added he knows where he’s coming from and is proud of it. She also hopes her children feel the same way as they grow up.

In the end, as one might expect, Minhaj lost the game, but was a good sport about it. At the end of the digital short, the two talk about getting nuggets and smoothies, in true Antetokounmpo comedy fashion.

Minhaj didn’t have any points on the board, but seemed to enjoy the experience, nonetheless.
